Researchers identified six fossil egg taxa in the Mussentuchit Member of Utah’s Cedar Mountain Formation. The finding comes from eggshell material gathered across 20 localities—not six complete eggs in one nest—and the shells point to eggs laid by oviraptorosaurs, ornithopods and a crocodylomorph.
What does “six types of dinosaur eggs” mean?
In a 2025 study, paleontologists classified six ootaxa—fossil egg taxa—by examining eggshell shape and microstructure. An ootaxon is a category used to classify fossil eggshell; it does not necessarily identify a parent animal as precisely as a skeleton can.
The count is not six intact eggs, six nests or six dinosaur species confirmed by associated skeletons. The study describes shell fossils from 20 localities. Its geological timescale places the full egg diversity within an estimated interval of about 89,000 years, not a single nesting season.
Where were the eggshells found?
The fossils came from the Mussentuchit Member, part of the Cedar Mountain Formation in central Utah. The unit dates to the Early Cenomanian, near the beginning of the Late Cretaceous. Hedge, Tucker, Makovicky and Zanno’s peer-reviewed study, published in PLOS ONE on February 26, 2025, examined material from 20 localities.

- Realistic oviraptor dinosaur egg cast
- Approximately 6" long
- Great addition to prehistoric fossil collections or as a gift for paleontology lovers
The researchers assessed more than 2,500 specimens in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences collection, along with loaned material from the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, the Field Museum and Brigham Young University. The Mussentuchit Member represents an estimated 800,000-year interval, according to the study’s chronology; the narrower 89,000-year estimate refers to the span constraining the egg diversity described there. These are geological estimates, not evidence that every egg type was present at the same moment.
What are the six fossil egg taxa?
| Fossil egg classification | Parent group associated by the study |
|---|---|
| Macroelongatoolithus | Oviraptorosaur dinosaur |
| Undulatoolithus | Oviraptorosaur dinosaur |
| Continuoolithus | Oviraptorosaur dinosaur |
| Two oospecies of Spheroolithus | Ornithopod dinosaur |
| Mycomorphoolithus kohringi | Crocodylomorph, an extinct crocodile relative |
The six consist of three egg genera in the family Elongatoolithidae, two fossil egg species (oospecies) in Spheroolithus, and one species, Mycomorphoolithus kohringi. “Oospecies” means a species in fossil egg classification; it is not automatically equivalent to a species named from a dinosaur skeleton.

What does the discovery suggest about the animals?
The three distinct elongatoolithid genera are associated with oviraptorosaurs. Their co-occurrence in the unit supports the authors’ inference that at least three putative oviraptorosaur taxa lived in the region. The authors describe this as the oldest known North American co-occurrence of this kind. These are scholarly inferences from eggshell classifications, not a one-to-one match between each shell type and a skeleton.
The two Spheroolithus oospecies are associated with ornithopods. The authors associate Mycomorphoolithus kohringi with a crocodylomorph, which is not a dinosaur. They also report that this is the first recognized occurrence of the egg genus outside Europe and its youngest documented occurrence.

Why do eggshell fossils add to the picture?
Eggshell can preserve evidence of animals that is not identical to the evidence supplied by bones. Here, the variety of shell forms adds to the picture of the Mussentuchit ecosystem and indicates greater local faunal diversity than the eggshell record had previously established. But shell categories do not establish every detail of the parent animals’ biology or nesting behavior.
In an NC State interview, coauthor Lindsay Zanno described the Mussentuchit ecosystem as a valuable window into western North America near the dawn of the Late Cretaceous. That is her framing of the site’s broader significance, rather than a measurement produced by the eggshell analysis.

Does the study show six egg types in one nest?
No. The study’s evidence is eggshell material analyzed across 20 localities in a geological unit. It does not report a single nest containing all six types. Nor should a count of egg taxa be treated as a count of complete eggs, clutches or species proven from skeletons.
