The partial hip bone, nearly complete thigh bone and complete shin bone belong to a young adult and support the interpretation that this species habitually walked upright. They do not, however, reveal every detail of its movement or settle the individual’s sex.
What bones were found?
The set, catalogued as SWT1/HR-2, consists of a partial os coxae (hip bone), a nearly complete femur (thigh bone) and a complete tibia (shin bone). The elements articulate as one individual, which researchers identify as a young adult Paranthropus robustus. They were excavated from the Hanging Remnant subunit of Member 1 in South Africa’s Swartkrans Formation. The primary study describes Member 1 as older than 1.7 million years and younger than 2.3 million years; this is the geological interval for the layer, not a precise age for SWT1/HR-2. The 2025 study by Pickering and colleagues provides the anatomical and site context.

Swartkrans has yielded many hominin skull and tooth fossils, but comparatively few remains from below the head. Because these hip and leg bones are associated and assigned to a species, they offer a useful reference for comparing isolated postcranial fossils and investigating P. robustus locomotion.
What do the bones reveal about walking?
The authors’ comparative analysis finds the hip, femur and tibia consistent with habitual bipedalism: regular movement on two legs. The ankle morphology also suggests relative stability under the loading expected during terrestrial bipedal walking. These are anatomical interpretations, not a direct record of this individual’s behavior. The fossils support upright walking without establishing every aspect of the species’ locomotor repertoire.

How small was this individual?
The individual was exceptionally small compared with other known adult hominins. The study reports that its femur and tibia are the shortest known adult examples of those bones in the hominin fossil record considered by its authors; its abstract describes SWT1/HR-2 as one of the smallest known adult hominins. Those comparisons establish unusual smallness, but the available reporting does not support a dependable single height or body-mass figure, so a precise estimate should not be inferred from the bone lengths alone.

Nature Africa’s 7 April 2025 report describes the young individual as female and quotes lead author Travis Pickering: “Finding that the new fossils come from not just another small individual but, more specifically, from the very smallest known adult early human was surprising.” That description should not be treated as a settled finding of the primary study. The authors discuss conflicting sex-related signals in the pelvis and caution that methods developed for modern humans do not transfer readily to australopith fossils. The individual’s sex therefore remains uncertain. Nature Africa’s report gives the accessible news framing.
What is known about how the fossil was deposited?
The authors consider a leopard the most parsimonious predator, consumer and depositor of SWT1/HR-2; a leopard skull was recovered in the same breccia block. This is a taphonomic inference about how the remains may have entered the deposit, not eyewitness evidence of the individual’s death. Cave fossil assemblages can form through multiple contributing causes.
How is this different from the Kromdraai fossils reported in 2026?
The Kromdraai report concerns a separate fossil sample and site, not SWT1/HR-2. It describes more than 50 hominin fossils recovered through renewed work at Kromdraai since 2014, including 21 postcranial elements. Some are tentatively assigned to Paranthropus, but none is directly associated with craniodental material. By contrast, the Swartkrans discovery is an articulating set assigned to P. robustus, and its hip and leg anatomy helps address how that species stood and moved. The 2026 Kromdraai study addresses the distinct finds.

What the discovery changes—and what it does not
SWT1/HR-2 adds rare, associated lower-body evidence to a species record better known for skulls and teeth. It strengthens the anatomical case for habitual upright walking and gives researchers a species-assigned set against which to compare other isolated hip and leg fossils. Its small size is striking, while its sex and exact fate remain unresolved. The bones refine the picture of P. robustus; they do not by themselves answer every question about how this hominin moved or lived.
