Its unusual nesting behavior is real: reports say it lays a single egg on the ground or in shallow leaf litter, rather than building a conventional nest. Why it does so is not known.
What is the “baby dragon” bird?
“Baby dragon” is a visual nickname, not a scientific name. The bird is the great eared nightjar, Lyncornis macrotis, a member of the nightjar family, Caprimulgidae. Cornell Lab’s eBird/Merlin identification entry calls it a “Unique, feline-looking nightjar.” Its upright posture, forward-facing eyes and feather tufts that resemble ears contribute to its striking appearance; brown patterns help it blend into its surroundings. Cornell Lab eBird/Merlin
Live Science reports a body length of 12–16 inches (30–40 cm). That range is reported in its 2025 article, rather than attributed there to a named primary study. Live Science
Where does the great eared nightjar live?
The species occurs across South and Southeast Asia. The published country list includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Cornell Lab describes its habitat as forests, forest edges, and fields or plains with some tree cover. Cornell Lab eBird/Merlin

How does it hunt at night?
During the day, the nightjar rests motionless, its patterned plumage helping it blend into the forest floor or nearby surroundings. Around twilight and at night, it hunts flying insects in the air, including moths and beetles, according to Live Science. The same report describes a haunting call at dawn and dusk; Cornell Lab renders its loud call as “bee-AHWEE!” Live Science Cornell Lab eBird/Merlin
Does the great eared nightjar build a nest?
Reports describe the female laying one egg directly on the forest floor or in shallow leaf litter, rather than in a built nest. Both parents reportedly incubate the egg, and the chick stays camouflaged on the ground while receiving parental care. These nesting details are reported by Live Science; the account does not identify a primary field study for each detail. Live Science

Why lay an egg on the ground?
The reason is unresolved. Live Science suggests that camouflage and cover may help keep the egg from being detected, but that is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed cause. Ground-laid eggs are unusual-looking to many readers, but the behavior should not be described as unique among birds or as “breaking all the rules.” Live Science
