Why American Crocodiles Thrive Around Florida’s Turkey Point Cooling Canals

Turkey Point’s cooling canals provide nesting habitat used by American crocodiles, but the local estimates, statewide recovery figures, and water-quality questions need to be kept distinct.

American crocodiles use the cooling-canal network at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point plant as nesting habitat. FPL estimates that about 300–400 crocodiles live within and around the system, but that is an operator-reported estimate—not a precise census. The canals are one part of a wider South Florida recovery, not proof that they alone restored the species or that the system has no environmental effects.

Why crocodiles use the Turkey Point canals

Turkey Point is in southern Miami-Dade County, where American crocodiles occupy coastal habitats. The cooling-canal system covers approximately 5,900 acres and serves as a heat-exchange system for plant units, according to Miami-Dade County. Crocodiles use habitat associated with the canals; their presence does not mean the animals live in the plant’s reactor systems.

Canal banks can offer elevated nesting places sheltered from wind and waves, with less disturbance and nearby nursery habitat. The University of Florida IFAS Extension notes that hatchlings are especially sensitive to high salinity. Their survival can decline when suitable lower-salinity nursery water is farther from the nest. Human-made habitat can help, but it can also degrade and requires active care.

FPL says its monitoring began after workers found a crocodile nest on a canal berm in 1978. The American crocodile had been federally listed as endangered in 1975; Florida’s population was downlisted to threatened in 2007, according to FPL’s tracking page. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) currently classifies the state population as threatened.

How many crocodiles are there?

FPL’s pages give estimates with different scopes. One says an average of about 300–400 crocodiles live within and around the cooling-canal system; another says approximately 400 are within the canals at any given time. These are company estimates, not an independently verified census, and the wording does not make them directly interchangeable.

For context, FWC estimates that Florida has up to 2,000 adult American crocodiles, recovered from a few hundred. That statewide adult estimate is not a count of Turkey Point animals.

What the nesting figures show—and what they do not

For the 2022 nesting season, FPL reported 33 nests and 512 hatchlings tagged and released at Turkey Point. The company described 33 as a record number of nests for its program and 512 as its third-largest tagged-and-released hatchling total. These are dated program results, not a current annual count or a measure of all crocodiles at the site.

A separate study published in 2022 analyzed 3,013 nests recorded across South Florida from 1970 through 2020. It found nesting success rose from 61% in the 1970s to near 90% since 2010. Those regional figures are not Turkey Point statistics. The study also found associations between nesting success and summer minimum temperature and rainfall; those correlations do not establish a single cause.

The study’s authors identified canals among the human-made habitats providing vital nesting habitat at Turkey Point and other Florida sites. Read together, the evidence supports a nuanced picture: engineered habitat contributes nesting opportunities, while wider regional trends reflect more than one location or factor.

Recovery depends on habitat, not just warm canals

Warmth alone does not explain the crocodiles’ success. The evidence points to a combination of nesting sites, suitable nursery water, protection, and ongoing habitat management. The USGS-published study considers several human-made habitats important; UF/IFAS describes the vulnerability of young crocodiles to high salinity and the need to maintain artificial habitat.

  • Durable PVC Build: Made from durable PVC plastic and intended for ages 3+. The standalone figure supports imaginative animal play, classroom activities, wildlife projects, habitat scenes, and repeated display use.

The canals also do not tell the whole story of Florida’s recovery. FPL’s own historical comparison says the site had one or two nests and about 30 hatchlings in the late 1970s, compared with approximately 22 nests and about 400 crocodiles currently in the system. Those figures come from different periods and are not a like-for-like scientific census. They illustrate the company’s account of change at Turkey Point, not proof that the canals caused the statewide recovery.

What is known about water-quality concerns

Wildlife use and environmental questions can coexist. Miami-Dade County says water monitoring during 2014 and early 2015 indicated increasing salinity and temperature, and that a third-party study examined those issues as well as migration of canal water into groundwater. That is dated monitoring context; the county page does not establish present-day measurements or a direct effect on crocodile health.

Can people visit the canals to see crocodiles?

Do not assume the operating Turkey Point cooling canals are open to the public. FWC lists Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge as places where people may observe crocodiles. American crocodiles are native to Florida, shy, and reclusive; FWC advises calling 866-392-4286 (866-FWC-GATOR) with concerns about a crocodile.
