A juvenile Northern Hairy-nosed wombat was caught on a motion-sensor camera wandering near its den at Richard Underwood Nature Reserve in Queensland. The September 2024 report described the joey as healthy and treated the sighting as an encouraging sign of breeding in a protected refuge—not as a staged photo shoot or proof of a population increase.
What the camera captured
Footage showed the young wombat emerging from a den and walking past a motion-sensor camera at Richard Underwood Nature Reserve (RUNR). The report estimated that it had left its mother’s pouch the previous year. It identified Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) as the source of the footage and described the animal as a healthy juvenile.
So the headline’s “photo shoot” is playful framing: the account describes routine wildlife monitoring, not people arranging or photographing the wombat up close. No camera make or model was identified.
Why this joey matters
RUNR is a fenced refuge where wombats were introduced as part of conservation work. Andy Howe, AWC Senior Field Ecologist, said the juvenile was the first spotted at the refuge “for a few years,” although it was not the first joey born there. He called the sighting gratifying evidence that the animals were breeding within the protected area.

Howe also said the wombat appeared robust, which he interpreted as an indication that it was feeding well and receiving enough nutrition. He said the footage suggested the reserve offered suitable conditions for breeding. Those are the ecologist’s interpretations of the recording; a single juvenile sighting cannot, by itself, measure population size or establish a population trend.
What the 2024 report said about rarity
The September 6, 2024 story described the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat as critically endangered and said there were “one of only 400 left in the wild.” That is a figure reported at the time, not a current census. The report also said fragmented populations restrict breeding opportunities. Its figures and conservation claims are attributable to the story and AWC, rather than independently verified current population data.

The story said AWC planned to develop a genetic management plan to support reintroduced populations and maintain breeding diversity. That was an announced plan in 2024; the report does not establish whether it has since been completed.
