H5N1 remains a concern in U.S. dairy cattle, but the practical advice is clear: commercial pasteurized milk is safe to drink, while raw milk and products made from it should be avoided. As of October 2, 2026, the outbreak response relies on testing, movement controls and farm biosecurity; dairy-cattle vaccine candidates are in field trials, but the reviewed official information does not establish a broadly deployed, routinely approved vaccine.
What is the latest on bird flu in dairy cows?
The U.S. dairy-cattle outbreak was first recognized in March 2024. CDC reporting identifies the virus in the initial wave as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13. By December 2025, more than 1,000 U.S. dairy herds had been reported infected, according to a CDC Emerging Infectious Diseases article published in 2026. That total reflects reported detections and may change as surveillance data are updated.
CDC’s situation summary, current as of October 2, 2026, describes A(H5) bird flu as widespread in wild birds and causing outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows. Sporadic human cases have occurred among dairy and poultry workers. CDC assesses the current risk to the general public as low, while people with animal exposure are monitored; low general-public risk does not mean there is no risk for workers handling infected animals or contaminated materials.
Human totals provide context but describe different periods and populations. CDC’s 2026 Emerging Infectious Diseases report counted 70 U.S. human H5N1 cases from March 2024 through May 2025; 41 were associated with dairy cattle and 24 with poultry. Separately, the Pan American Health Organization reported 1,002 laboratory-confirmed human cases and 479 deaths globally from 2003 through August 7, 2026. The global cumulative count is not a measure of risk from drinking pasteurized milk or of the current U.S. outbreak alone.

Is pasteurized milk safe, and what about raw milk?
Pasteurization inactivates H5N1 virus. CDC’s May 30, 2024 MMWR states: “Pasteurization inactivates A(H5N1) viruses, and the commercial milk supply is safe for consumption; however, all persons should avoid consuming raw milk or products produced from raw milk.” The distinction is processing: commercial pasteurized milk is treated to inactivate the virus; raw, unpasteurized milk may contain live virus.
CDC’s MMWR reports high concentrations of H5N1 in unpasteurized milk from infected cows. Do not drink raw milk or eat products made from it. This applies to people generally, not just those who work on farms.

How does H5N1 spread among dairy cattle and farms?
Within a herd
CDC virology reporting found high levels of infectious virus shed in milk from infected cows, making milk-mediated cow-to-cow transmission highly likely. This is why milk is important both as a transmission concern and as a sample for herd surveillance.
Between farms
USDA says regional farm-to-farm spread is also associated with livestock movements and routine business activity, including people, vehicles and equipment traveling between premises. The agency emphasizes cleaning, biosecurity and movement controls to reduce the chance of carrying contaminated material from one farm to another.

USDA also says genomic and epidemiologic data do not currently support migratory waterfowl as the route by which the virus is introduced onto dairy or poultry premises. That finding concerns the introduction route to those premises; it does not negate the wider presence of H5 viruses in wild birds.
How are infected herds being found and cattle movements controlled?
USDA’s National Milk Testing Strategy combines several forms of surveillance with movement requirements. They answer different questions: pooled milk sampling can flag a herd or processing supply area, while an individual animal test is used for a specific pre-movement requirement.

| Method | What it samples or checks | Role and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Processing-plant silo monitoring | Milk collected at processing plants | Part of USDA’s national monitoring strategy; a pooled sample does not by itself identify the source herd. |
| State surveillance and case investigations | Samples and information gathered through state monitoring and follow-up | Used to detect and investigate cases; the precise sampling details vary by investigation. |
| Pre-movement testing | Lactating cattle moving interstate | USDA requires testing before interstate movement to help prevent infected cattle from spreading the virus. |
| Dairy Herd Status Program | Weekly bulk-milk samples from participating herds | Voluntary movement-monitoring option. USDA reported 100 enrolled herds in 18 states as of September 2026. |
Bulk-milk and silo samples are composites rather than individual-cow tests. A CDC retail-milk study published January 30, 2026 notes that composite retail samples have limited geographic resolution: they cannot identify the source herd or fully resolve viral evolution. During the study periods, influenza A-positive retail milk was found only in California; that finding should not be read as a map of all infected herds or as proof that the virus was absent elsewhere. The study also describes two additional D1.1 spillover events detected through the National Milk Testing Strategy.
USDA’s Secure Our Herds page, last modified September 25, 2026, describes enhanced testing, biosecurity, movement controls and vaccine development as ongoing response measures.

What should dairy workers and other exposed people do?
People who handle cattle, raw milk or potentially contaminated materials have a different exposure profile from the general public. CDC identifies exposed workers as higher risk and recommends using appropriate personal protective equipment, monitoring for symptoms and promptly seeking medical evaluation if symptoms develop. A clinician can arrange testing and antiviral treatment when indicated.
The first two presumed U.S. cow-to-human cases documented by CDC involved conjunctivitis only. That finding is a description of those cases, not a guarantee that every infection will be mild or present the same way. Workers should follow current public-health and workplace guidance rather than relying on symptom expectations from a small number of cases.
Is there a vaccine for dairy cattle?
USDA says several H5N1 vaccine candidates for dairy cows are in field trials and that it supports rapid development and timely approval. The official information reviewed through October 2, 2026 does not establish a routinely approved, broadly deployed dairy-cattle vaccine. Whether and when a candidate will be authorized and deployed remains unresolved, so vaccination should not be treated as an available substitute for testing, biosecurity or movement controls.
