The viral giant-frog clip showed a real frog, Dumpy, made to look enormous with visual effects and perspective tricks. His owner, videographer Lucas Peterson, said the banana was part of a comedy video, not Dumpy’s real diet. He estimated the frog’s actual size at about 4–5 inches (10–13 cm).
What was real—and what was edited?
Dumpy is a real White’s tree frog owned by Lucas Peterson. The giant appearance in the viral video was not his actual size: Peterson said he enlarged Dumpy using visual effects and perspective tricks. Futurism reported Peterson’s explanation in October 2022, and CNN.co.jp also described the visual enlargement.
Peterson estimated Dumpy’s real length at 4–5 inches. CNN.co.jp reported the estimate as 10–13 cm. These are the owner’s reported estimates, not the result of an independent measurement. PopCrush reported Peterson’s estimate that the video made Dumpy appear about four to five times his actual size.
Does Dumpy eat bananas?
Not as shown in the comedy clip. Peterson said the banana was not Dumpy’s real diet and that the frog typically ate 12 crickets a week in his terrarium. That is Peterson’s description of this individual frog’s routine, not a general feeding recommendation or an independently verified feeding record.

Why did people mistake the clip for a real giant frog?
Reposts on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram circulated without the fuller explanatory caption, according to CNN.co.jp. Without that context, viewers could encounter the exaggerated image as though it documented a naturally enormous frog. PopCrush also reported Peterson’s explanation of the editing effect and the frog’s actual size.
How to check a viral animal video
A striking clip is worth checking before sharing, especially if the image seems extraordinary or the repost has little context. Scholastic’s media-literacy guidance suggests looking at the original poster and account, checking trustworthy reporting and reliable references, and using reverse image search to compare versions. Those steps help assess a clip; they are not, by themselves, proof that it is fake.
