Its powerful legs and striking appearance invite the comparison; its fruit-heavy diet and role spreading rainforest seeds tell a different story. Velociraptor was a small, feathered carnivorous dinosaur that lived millions of years ago in what is now China and Mongolia.
Why is the cassowary called Australia’s Velociraptor?
The nickname is a visual comparison, not a scientific classification. A cassowary’s size, strong legs, long claws and distinctive casque—the hard-looking crest on its head—can make it seem like an animal from the age of dinosaurs. It is also capable of injuring people, so its formidable appearance is not entirely misleading.
But the southern cassowary, Casuarius casuarius johnsonii, is a modern bird. In Queensland it lives in tropical rainforest and fruit-rich woodland. Females can reach two metres tall and 76 kilograms, according to the Queensland Government’s species information, last updated 23 March 2026. Queensland Government: Southern cassowary
Birds belong within the evolutionary history of theropod dinosaurs, but that broad connection does not make the cassowary a living Velociraptor or establish a special direct relationship between the two. They are very different animals with different diets and lives.

How do cassowaries differ from Velociraptor?
Velociraptor mongoliensis was a small, feathered carnivore known from fossils in China and Mongolia. The Australian Museum places it around 80 million years ago; the Natural History Museum compares its size to a turkey. Cassowaries, by contrast, are living, large-bodied birds native to the region that includes New Guinea and, in Australia, parts of north Queensland.
| Feature | Southern cassowary | Velociraptor |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Living, flightless bird | Extinct dinosaur known from fossils |
| Range and time | New Guinea and surrounding islands; in Australia, north Queensland | China and Mongolia, around 80 million years ago |
| Size | Females can reach two metres and 76 kilograms in the Queensland Government’s account | About turkey-sized, according to the Natural History Museum |
| Diet | Mainly fallen fruit, plus small animals and other foods | Carnivorous |
| What the evidence supports | Modern behavior can be observed directly | Behavior must be inferred from fossils; the Natural History Museum says there is no current evidence for communal hunting |
Velociraptor had dagger-like teeth, long arms and a sickle-shaped claw on its second toe. Paleontologists interpret that claw as likely useful for stabbing, hooking, restraining or gripping prey, rather than as the cinematic disemboweling blade often shown in films. These are interpretations of fossil evidence, not observations of a living animal. Australian Museum: Velociraptor · Natural History Museum: Velociraptor

What do cassowaries eat, and why do they matter to rainforest?
Fallen fruit is the cassowary’s main food. Queensland Government information records more than 238 plant species in the southern cassowary’s diet. The birds also eat items including insects, fungi, plants, snails and small dead mammals; some of the fruits they consume are toxic to people.
After eating fruit, cassowaries disperse seeds in their droppings, which also provide fertilizer. Some large rainforest seeds are spread by cassowaries, and passage through a bird’s digestive system can benefit some seeds. This makes the cassowary more than a striking resident of the forest: it helps rainforest plants spread and regenerate.

Where do southern cassowaries live, and what threatens them?
In Australia, southern cassowaries occur in north Queensland: in the Wet Tropics and in two Cape York populations, according to the Queensland Government. Their broader range includes Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands. Queensland lists the southern cassowary as endangered; that is the Queensland listing and regional context, not a statement about conservation status everywhere the species occurs.
The Queensland Government describes the bird as solitary and says its home range varies with season and food availability. The reported range-size span is 0.52 to 2.35 km²; it should not be treated as a fixed territory for every bird or population. Listed threats include habitat loss and fragmentation, vehicle strikes, and introduced animals such as dogs and pigs. The cited government material does not provide a directly comparable current estimate of the Australian wild population.

Are cassowaries dangerous to people?
Cassowaries can injure people, particularly if a bird is cornered or has learned to expect food from people. National Geographic reported on 2 January 2026 that a study of 150 reported cassowary attacks in Queensland found that most involved birds defending food, chicks or eggs, or being cornered. In 75 percent of the reported cases, people had previously fed the birds. Those figures describe reported cases in Queensland—not the likelihood of an attack for an individual person or a population-wide attack rate.
The same National Geographic feature recounted two recorded human deaths, in 1926 and 2019. It quoted paleontologist Todd Green saying, “They have the equipment to cause a lot of damage,” while also noting his point that respecting the birds’ space makes an incident very unlikely. The practical lesson is to avoid provoking or habituating a cassowary, not to treat every encounter as an attack in progress. National Geographic: Is the cassowary really the world’s most dangerous bird?

What should you do if you encounter a cassowary?
Queensland Government guidance emphasizes giving cassowaries space and removing reasons for them to approach people. These measures reduce avoidable risks but cannot guarantee safety in every encounter. Queensland Government: Cassowary safety
- Never feed or approach a cassowary. Put food scraps in closed bins.
- Keep dogs indoors or on a leash.
- Slow down in cassowary habitat. Do not stop your vehicle on the road to watch a bird.
- If a cassowary comes toward you, stay calm, face it and back away slowly. If possible, keep an object such as a tree or backpack between you and the bird.
What the nickname gets right—and wrong
The cassowary and Velociraptor can both look formidable, and modern birds are part of the dinosaur evolutionary story. But the resemblance is not evidence that cassowaries are living Velociraptors. The cassowary is a fruit-eating rainforest bird whose seed-spreading activity benefits its habitat; Velociraptor was a small extinct carnivore whose behavior can only be reconstructed cautiously from fossils.
