A secondary project roundup names a drill, pallet wood, pipe and funnel without dimensions, attachment points or assembly steps. That is a concept, not a complete plan. Here’s what the idea establishes—and how to make responsible decisions about seed, placement and care while you look for a verified design.
What the cutting-board feeder idea does—and doesn’t—tell you
A secondary roundup describes reusing an old cutting board and lists a drill machine, pallet wood, pipe and funnel. It does not explain what each item does, how parts attach, what dimensions to use, or how to hang or mount the finished feeder. The listing therefore cannot serve as a replicable build plan, and those items should not be treated as a complete or universally required materials list. See the Bright Stuffs project roundup for the limited description.
Because those construction details are missing, there is no supported step-by-step method here for cutting, drilling, fastening or suspending a board. In particular, no verified source establishes a mounting height or confirms that a specific cutting board is suitable for outdoor use. Before building, obtain instructions for the exact design and check that its finished form is sturdy, keeps seed dry and can be cleaned thoroughly.
What to check before choosing a feeder design
Cornell Lab’s feeder guidance says an ideal feeder should be sturdy, keep seed dry and be easy to clean. These are useful checks for any design, including an upcycled one. Cornell also notes that plastic and metal feeders are usually easier to clean and sanitize than wooden feeders; that general comparison does not determine whether a particular cutting board will work outdoors. Read Cornell’s guide to choosing a bird feeder before committing to a design.

- HOLLOW MESH TRAY - The sturdy mesh bottom is powder coated promote drainage, keeps seeds dry and fresh for longer, from moisture and mold. Besides, distribute food, in case the food in the middle of the feeder cannot be eaten, causing wasted. (Patent Pending)
- Sturdiness: The plan should specify secure connections and a stable way to support the feeder.
- Dry seed: The design should keep seed from staying wet, which can undermine safe feeding.
- Cleanability: You need access to the parts that collect seed and debris so you can scrub, rinse and dry them.
These are evaluation criteria, not construction instructions; the available cutting-board listing does not establish how to meet them.
What seed to put in it
Birdseed is the supported general choice for a seed feeder. The right seed depends on the feeder opening and the birds you hope to attract, so there is no single blend established here as best for every design or locality. Audubon’s bird-feeding and care guidance and its recycled-material feeder instructions offer starting points, but neither identifies a seed blend for this cutting-board concept.

- Perfect Gift for Family with Kids: feeders in the garden to entice a range of birds, such as vibrant cardinals, can aid children in discovering different bird species and fostering a deeper connection with the natural world. Additionally, this feeder serves as an exquisite ornament for the garden.
Where to place a feeder
Place a feeder near dense trees, shrubs or a brush pile so birds have nearby cover, but not so close that a predator can use that cover to ambush them. The National Wildlife Federation also recommends spreading feeder activity rather than concentrating it in one spot. Its bird-feeder tip sheet gives this general siting advice; it does not specify a height for a cutting-board feeder.
How to clean and dry it
Make cleaning part of the routine from the start. Audubon reports that Project FeederWatch recommends cleaning seed feeders about every two weeks. Audubon also describes every other week as a good starting interval for seed and suet feeders, with more frequent cleaning in humid or hot weather. Cornell Lab’s classroom guidance likewise recommends cleaning every two weeks.

- The wooden bird feeder is made of lightweight wood planks, which is stable, durable, and beautiful. It is hung up to provide a feeding place for native birds such as Cardinals, Chickadees, Blackbirds, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Robins.
- There are open feeding windows on four sides, which can attract multiple species of birds to forage in different directions. The tray space around the bottom reduces food waste and makes it easier for birds to land, which brings together the birds in the garden.
- The lid on the top can be easily opened, which is very convenient for adding bird seed foods such as wheat, peanuts, corn, sunflower seed hearts and nuts. And the acrylic sheets on both sides can also be removed, which can clean up leftover birdfood when needed.
- The large capacity bird feeder container can hold about 2 liters of mixed seed food. By default, there is a fuzzy protective film on the surface of the acrylic sheet, please peel it off before installation, and you will get a clear and transparent view to see the seed food in the container.
- Reserved screw holes and equipped screws and screwdrivers make it easy to assemble this solid hanging wood bird feeder. Please read the installation manual carefully before assembly.
- Discard uneaten seed rather than dumping it on the ground.
- Scrub the feeder with soap and water.
- Sanitize with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water, as described in the guidance from Audubon and Cornell.
- Rinse thoroughly and let the feeder dry completely before refilling it.
Audubon’s detailed feeder disease-prevention guidance was updated April 24, 2024; its winter feeding guidance and Cornell’s classroom feeder-care advice also describe regular cleaning and thorough drying. Sunny Kellner, a wildlife rehabilitation and outreach specialist at Sharon Audubon Center, emphasized the importance of emptying and disinfecting feeders to help prevent cross-contamination of illnesses birds can share at feeders in an Audubon New York article published January 13, 2023.

If you want a project with published assembly steps while you search for a complete cutting-board plan, Audubon’s recycled-carton feeder is a separate design—not a way to build the cutting-board version. Its instructions use a milk or juice carton, cord or similar hanging material, paint or decorations, craft or hot glue and birdseed. The process includes cutting a food opening, adding a stick perch and hanging holes, then filling and hanging the carton; Audubon calls for adult supervision. Follow the carton-specific instructions rather than transferring those steps or materials to a cutting board.
