If by “make bird calls” you mean learn what you’re hearing, start with a few familiar local birds, listen actively, and connect each sound to the bird when you can see it. This guide focuses on recognizing and remembering calls and songs; the sources here don’t establish a reliable method for imitating them with your voice or a whistle.
Start with a few birds you can hear nearby
Choose one or two common species in your neighborhood or a regular park. A small, familiar set is easier to learn than trying to memorize every bird at once. Kenn Kaufman suggests the American Robin as a useful starting point in North America; if you live elsewhere, begin with birds common in your own area. Audubon’s guide to learning bird songs explains this small-set approach.
Pick birds you are likely to encounter repeatedly. Hearing the same sound in different visits gives you a chance to notice its pattern rather than trying to learn it from a single listen.
Listen actively, not as background noise
Focus on one recording or one singer at a time. Describe what you hear in plain language before looking up the answer:

- How many notes or syllables are there?
- Does the sound rise, fall, or stay at a similar pitch?
- Are the notes repeated, and is the rhythm quick or spaced out?
- Does the sound have a clear, thin, rough, or whistling tone?
Write a short description, sketch the sound, or invent a mnemonic to help remember it. Kaufman gives “Who cooks for you” for the Barred Owl and “Wichity-wichity-wichity” for the Common Yellowthroat as examples. A mnemonic is a memory aid, not a precise transcription: use it to recall a sound, then return to the recording to check what you actually hear.
Cornell Lab recommends attending to rhythm, repetition, pitch, and tone. Its guide to learning bird songs and calls also describes spectrograms, which display sound visually. They can help you inspect features such as pitch, tone, and volume, but they work best alongside careful listening.

- Authentic American Craftsmanship: The original Audubon bird call, recognized by multiple generations of birders and outdoors people, has been made and tuned by hand in the USA in the same way for over 78 years
- Versatile Sound Production: The bird call's sound is produced by rotating the wooden cylinder against the cast zinc plug, and various bird sounds can be accurately imitated by varying the pressure between the two surfaces while twisting back and forth
- Effective Bird Attraction Method: Originally conceived by songbird hunters in Europe, the bird call attracts birds by creating the illusion that other birds are in the area
- Maintenance and Care Instructions: Be sure to keep the instrument dry; a small amount of the included powdered rosin, used occasionally, will renew the bird call's voice
- Compact and Portable Design: Total length approximately 2.5 inches by 0.75 inches wide, making it easy to carry on any outdoor adventure
Connect each sound to its source
When a bird is visible, watch it as it sings or calls. Linking the sound to the bird’s appearance and behavior can make the identification easier to remember. In the field, first listen and look for the singer instead of treating an app’s suggestion as the answer.
After listening to a recording, try to recognize that bird outdoors. Local bird walks, clubs, or guided field trips let you hear calls in context and ask more experienced birders questions. Cornell’s Birds Near Me tool and the Macaulay Library provide sound examples; check that the species and recordings are relevant to your region.

Merlin Sound ID
Cornell Lab presents Merlin Sound ID as a way to get started and focus attention on sounds. Treat its identification as a suggestion from a knowledgeable friend, not a verdict: Cornell says Merlin “isn’t always right.” Check a candidate against what you hear, any visible field marks, the habitat, and other recordings. The goal is to build your own recognition, not simply collect app labels. Cornell Lab’s listening guide explains this role for sound ID.
BirdWise Sound ID Quizzing
Cornell Lab’s BirdWise Sound ID Quizzing offers structured listening practice. Its 2026 launch announcement says the quiz covers more than 590 bird species across the U.S. and Canada. That figure describes this quiz’s stated coverage, not all Cornell sound tools or all bird species. Read Cornell Lab’s BirdWise announcement.

Keep playback brief and follow local rules
Studying recordings at home does not require broadcasting calls outdoors. Playback can disturb birds and other people, and restrictions vary by site. Audubon reports that playback is prohibited in many parks and refuges, and that disturbing threatened or endangered species is illegal. Check the rules for the place you visit and avoid playback where it could cause disturbance. Audubon’s article on using birdcall apps discusses responsible playback.
If playback is allowed and appropriate, Audubon recommends using low volume, starting with just a few seconds, pausing to observe, and avoiding repeated prolonged use. Stop after roughly five minutes without a response. Do not use playback simply to draw a bird out for a better look.
