Yes—bees can collect pollen from an artificial flower built for experiments. In a laboratory comparison, Bombus impatiens workers collected more pulverized honeybee pollen from feeders that dispensed it through a chenille-stem “anther” than from dish-type feeders. The result is about a research device and captive bee behavior, not a garden ornament proven to feed wild bees or pollinate crops.
How does an artificial flower dispense pollen?
Russell and Papaj’s 2016 design used a chenille stem—the fuzzy material commonly sold as a pipe cleaner—as an artificial anther. Pollen could be presented through the stem in flexible amounts, letting researchers observe bees collecting it under controlled conditions. The authors describe the device as inexpensive and modifiable; its role was experimental, not as a commercial wildlife feeder. Read the study in the Journal of Pollination Ecology.
In laboratory assays, the researchers compared chenille-stem feeders with dish-type feeders using pulverized honeybee pollen and Bombus impatiens workers. The workers collected more pollen at the chenille-stem feeders. The accessible abstract does not report a numeric effect size, so the finding supports the direction of the comparison, not a claim about how large the difference was.
What did a separate artificial-flower study test?
A 2014 PLOS ONE study examined pollen and sugar-solution foraging by Bombus terrestris. Its artificial flowers were blue EVA foam discs fitted with coloured chick-feather bunches and cut pipette tips. Yellow-feather flowers offered pollen; orange-feather flowers offered sugar solution. In one individual-foraging experiment, the researchers used Pinus pollen, including pollen mixed with glass powder to vary the pollen reward. These were controlled laboratory treatments, not natural flowers. Read the PLOS ONE study.

What the monitoring numbers mean
During a longer-term monitoring experiment lasting 20–41 days, 41 of 48 individually marked workers collected pollen at least once. Across workers, the reported average shares of observed days were 63% with sugar-solution collection, 6% with pollen collection, 15% with both, and 16% with neither. These are averages of observed days in that experiment, not percentages of bumblebees generally.
The same paper also reports that 85% of monitored workers generally collected both sugar solution and pollen over the observation period. In a separate individual-foraging experiment, 32 of 38 workers (84.2%) collected both reward types at least once, with exclusions specified by the authors. These figures use different analyses and denominators; they should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.

What the experiments do—and don’t—show
| Study | Bee species | Artificial setup and reward | What was measured or reported |
|---|---|---|---|
| Russell and Papaj, 2016 | Bombus impatiens | Chenille-stem pollen dispenser compared with a dish-type feeder; pulverized honeybee pollen | Workers collected more pollen at the chenille-stem feeders; the accessible abstract gives no numeric effect size. |
| Konzmann and Lunau, 2014 | Bombus terrestris | Artificial flowers offering pollen or sugar solution; pollen treatments included surrogates and Pinus pollen mixed with glass powder | Laboratory foraging behavior, including collection of each reward type; findings depend on the particular experiment and analysis. |
Together, these studies show that experimental flowers can present pollen in a way that bumblebees collect, and that researchers can manipulate reward type and amount to study foraging. They do not establish that an artificial flower can sustain a colony, replace natural forage, or produce pollination in the field. The species, apparatus, reward and measured behavior differ between the studies, so their findings are not a direct comparison of one flower design against the other.
