An eight-year-old boy was bitten by a snake in the front yard of his family’s Perth Hills home, according to a PerthNow report published on 29 February 2024. The family said the snake was believed to be a highly venomous dugite; the report did not establish a confirmed species identification. Their experience is a reminder to call 000 immediately for any suspected snakebite, keep the person still and apply a pressure immobilisation bandage.

What happened to the boy in Perth Hills?

PerthNow reported that Camden was playing in the front yard when a snake emerged from piping and bit him between the toes. His mother, Claire, began bandaging him, but the family initially had trouble reaching Triple Zero because of poor mobile reception. The report says Claire eventually reached emergency services using a Wi-Fi call; that is a family-reported experience, not a guarantee that Wi-Fi calling will work in every emergency.

According to the report and family accounts, Camden later vomited and said he could not see. He received antivenom in hospital and was admitted to intensive care while clinicians monitored concerns about blood clotting. These details come from the news report and family accounts, not independently reviewed medical records. The family’s warning was prompted by this frightening incident; the snake’s identification remained unconfirmed in the report. PerthNow’s report, 29 February 2024.

What should you do if someone is bitten by a snake in Western Australia?

WA Health advises treating every suspected snakebite as potentially life-threatening. Call 000 for an ambulance, keep the person calm and still, and apply a pressure immobilisation bandage. Do not let the person walk. Do not try to catch or kill the snake, and do not wash, squeeze or puncture the bite site. WA Health: Snake bites.

  2. Keep the person still and calm. Do not have them walk to a vehicle or toward help. Bring transport and medical assistance to the person instead.
  3. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage. Use a broad elastic compression bandage and then splint the affected limb to limit movement. Perth Children’s Hospital’s emergency guideline includes reassurance, stillness, pressure immobilisation and splinting; it is clinical guidance, not a layperson’s method for deciding whether venom was injected. Perth Children’s Hospital emergency department guideline: Snakebite.
  4. Leave the snake alone. Do not approach, catch or kill it. A suspected bite needs urgent medical attention without trying to identify the animal yourself.

Does the snake’s species change the response?

No. WA Health’s advice is to treat a suspected snakebite as potentially life-threatening and seek urgent ambulance help. Perth Children’s Hospital’s guideline likewise says patients are treated as potentially envenomed until assessment resolves that question. Do not wait to identify the snake before calling 000 or starting first aid.

The hospital guideline lists dugites among Western Australia’s brown snakes and describes broad regional patterns: brown snakes occur widely around Perth, death adders in the hills, brown snakes in sand, and tiger snakes around waterways. Those general patterns cannot establish which snake bit Camden—or identify a snake at a particular home. Perth Children’s Hospital emergency department guideline: Snakebite.

A broad elastic compression bandage is the relevant bandage category in the official guidance, and a limb splint can help keep the affected area still. These are category-level preparedness suggestions, not endorsements or performance claims about any particular product. A kit does not replace calling 000 or getting urgent medical care. WA Health: Snake bites; Perth Children’s Hospital emergency department guideline: Snakebite.

How serious are snakebites in Australia?

Healthdirect Australia gives a general estimate of between one and four snakebite deaths per year in Australia; the retrieved page does not state a reporting year, so this should not be read as a figure for 2024 or 2026.
