Changes in food, activity or life stage are possible explanations, but so are conditions such as intestinal disease, pancreatic insufficiency, parasites and diabetes. Weight loss alone cannot identify the cause, so discuss unexplained or continuing loss with your veterinarian.
How weight loss can happen despite a normal appetite
Body weight falls when the energy and nutrients a dog can use do not keep pace with what its body needs. A dog may seem eager to eat yet receive too few calories, need more energy than before, or fail to digest and absorb food effectively. Vomiting, diarrhea or excessive urination can also contribute to losses.

More exercise, growth, pregnancy, nursing or cold exposure can affect energy needs; illness is another important possibility. Apparent interest in food does not establish that a dog is eating enough, chewing and swallowing normally, or getting usable nutrition.
Patterns that may help the veterinarian narrow the possibilities
These signs are clues for a veterinary assessment, not a way to diagnose a dog at home. Consider the whole pattern: whether weight is falling quickly or gradually, appetite, thirst and urination, stool, vomiting or regurgitation, chewing and swallowing, food and activity changes, and life stage.

Good or increased appetite with digestive changes
Malabsorption means the gut is not taking up nutrients adequately. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies small-intestinal disease and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) among possible causes. Weight loss may occur even with a good or ravenous appetite. Long-term diarrhea is common in malabsorption, but its absence does not rule out serious gastrointestinal disease.
EPI occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes. It can interfere with nutrient absorption and cause weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite. Large-volume, pale or fatty stools may be another clue, but stool appearance and appetite cannot confirm EPI.

Weight loss with increased thirst and urination
Diabetes is one possibility when a dog loses weight while eating more and also drinks and urinates more. Merck notes that diagnosis depends on persistent high blood glucose and glucose in the urine; the symptom pattern alone is not enough.
Other changes to report
Parasites, infectious disease, cancer, and kidney, liver, heart, pancreatic or gastrointestinal disease are among the other possibilities named by VCA. Vomiting, regurgitation, altered stool, trouble chewing or swallowing, and changes in activity can help the veterinarian decide what to investigate. No single sign on this list identifies a cause.

How to check and record the weight trend
VCA considers loss of more than 10% of a dog’s normal body weight clinically significant when it is not due to fluid loss or dehydration. This is a reference point, not a threshold to wait for: faster loss is more concerning, and unexplained or continuing loss merits a conversation with a veterinarian.
If you can weigh your dog reliably, keep a dated record and bring it to the appointment. Record the food and quantity offered, appetite, activity, water intake and urination, stool changes, vomiting or regurgitation, medications and supplements, and parasite prevention or testing history. These observations give the veterinarian useful context; they are not a home diagnostic score.

What to expect at a veterinary visit
The veterinarian will ask about what and how much your dog eats, appetite, activity, chewing and swallowing, regurgitation, vomiting, stool, drinking and urination, medications and supplements, and parasite prevention or testing. A complete history and physical examination help determine which tests are appropriate.
Common initial tests may include a complete blood count, blood chemistry profile, urinalysis and parasite testing. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may recommend X-rays or abdominal ultrasound. If EPI is suspected, Merck describes serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity testing; other tests for intestinal disease may follow according to the results. Not every dog needs every test.

When to contact a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian about weight loss that is unexplained or continuing. Seek advice promptly if the loss is rapid or worsening, or if it occurs alongside signs such as increased thirst and urination, vomiting, regurgitation, diarrhea, trouble eating or swallowing, or a marked change in activity. There is no single timing rule that fits every dog; your veterinarian can advise based on the rate of loss and the dog’s other signs.
Do not rely on simply offering more food, changing diets, deworming or giving digestive supplements as a substitute for finding the cause. Treatment depends on the assessment and diagnosis.
