A lower number on the scale shows that your dog’s total weight has changed; it cannot tell you whether the change came from fat, muscle, fluid, or a combination. To tell fat loss from muscle loss, assess both body condition score (BCS) and muscle condition score (MCS): BCS evaluates fat cover, while MCS evaluates muscle.
How are weight loss, fat loss, and muscle loss different?
Body weight combines everything that contributes to the number on the scale. A dog may lose body fat, muscle, fluid, or more than one of these. Appearance and weight alone cannot identify the cause.
BCS and MCS describe different tissues, so one cannot substitute for the other. A dog can have noticeable muscle loss while still carrying adequate or excess body fat; a dog with a low BCS may have little muscle loss. Merck reports a statistically significant correlation between canine BCS and body-fat percentage (r = 0.90), but BCS does not assess muscle mass and that correlation is not a guarantee for an individual dog. How to check body fat with a body condition score
Look at your dog from above and from the side, then gently feel the ribs and tail-base area. These observations help assess fat cover and body shape:

- Ribs: In ideal condition, they are readily felt beneath a slight fat covering.
- Waist and abdomen: Look for a proportionate waist from above and an abdominal tuck from the side.
- Tail base: The contour should be smooth, with the bones palpable under a thin layer of fat.
Merck identifies 4–5 on a 9-point BCS scale as ideal for dogs. Record which scale you use; scores from different scales should not be assumed equivalent. The Merck body condition score scales show the scale and its descriptions.
How to check for muscle loss
Look at and gently feel the muscles over the spine, shoulder blades, skull, and pelvis. The WSAVA chart notes that loss is often first noticed in the epaxial muscles alongside the spine, although the pattern can vary. Palpation—feeling the areas as well as looking—can help detect mild loss and is particularly useful when a dog is overweight, because fat can make muscle changes harder to see.

WSAVA grades muscle condition as normal, mild loss, moderate loss, or severe loss. Its Muscle Condition Score Chart for Dogs illustrates what to look and feel for at these sites. A veterinary team can assess and record MCS alongside BCS.
How to track changes consistently
- Record body weight. Use consistent weighing conditions where practical, and keep a dated record rather than relying on memory.
- Record BCS and its scale. Note the score and whether the scale is 9-point or another format.
- Record MCS separately. Note the muscle score and the areas where you notice change; do not infer muscle condition from BCS.
- Ask your veterinary team to assess both. WSAVA’s Nutritional Assessment Guidelines recommend consistent body-weight measurements alongside BCS and MCS.
When is weight loss concerning in a dog?
Contact a veterinarian about unexplained weight loss or visible or palpable muscle wasting rather than trying to diagnose the cause from appearance alone. VCA Animal Hospitals describes unintentional loss of more than 10% of normal body weight as clinically significant when it is not due to fluid loss or dehydration; faster loss is more concerning. The cited VCA page does not state a publication year. Its guide to abnormal weight loss in dogs explains that veterinary evaluation includes history, physical examination, and appropriate diagnostic testing.

A scale can help track weight, but it cannot distinguish fat from muscle or diagnose the reason for a change.
