For a small dog you can lift safely and keep still, use a bathroom scale twice: weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your dog, and subtract your weight from the combined reading. Treat the result as an estimate for tracking—not a substitute for a veterinary measurement. For a dog who is too large to lift, or who struggles, use a suitable floor scale or arrange a clinic weigh-in instead.
Choose a weighing method that is safe for your dog
| Option | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom scale and subtraction | A small dog who can be lifted safely and held still | Convenient for basic trend monitoring, but the result is an estimate and depends on the scale resolving the difference. PetMD describes this approach. |
| Baby or pet scale | A small dog when a finer reading is needed | VCA advises using a scale accurate to ounces for small dogs. Check that its platform and capacity suit your dog. VCA Animal Hospitals |
| Suitable-capacity floor or dog scale | A larger dog who can step onto the platform | Check the scale’s capacity, stability and access. Individual models have not been compared here; PetMD discusses dedicated scales for very large dogs. PetMD |
| Veterinary clinic scale | Confirmation or a measurement for clinical care | Ask the veterinary team about weighing your dog at the clinic. Home and clinic readings can differ. PetMD |
Choose based on your dog’s size and comfort as well as the scale’s capacity, resolution and stability. Do not lift a dog who struggles or force one onto a scale.
How to use a bathroom scale with a small dog
- Put the bathroom scale on a hard, flat floor and note the reading in a consistent unit.
- Weigh yourself without the dog and record the number.
- Pick up your dog only if you can do so safely. Step onto the scale again while holding the dog, keeping still, and record the combined reading.
- Subtract your weight alone from the combined reading. The difference is an estimate of your dog’s weight.
If your dog will not stay still, or the scale cannot show a useful difference, stop and choose a more suitable scale or ask the clinic to weigh your dog. A fraction of a pound can matter proportionally more for a small dog, so finer resolution may be needed; VCA recommends ounce-level accuracy for small dogs.
Help a larger dog get comfortable on a floor scale
A larger dog who can step onto a floor scale may benefit from calm, gradual practice. Dogs Trust recommends a stable, clean, non-slip surface and positive reinforcement. Let your dog investigate the scale, reward small steps toward standing on it, and pause or return to an easier step if the dog seems uncomfortable. Never drag or force your dog onto the platform. Dogs Trust’s scale-training guidance explains this gradual approach.

Track readings consistently
Use the same scale for repeat readings whenever possible. Home readings are useful for basic trends, but they may not match a veterinary scale; confirm a discrepancy that could affect care with your veterinary team. PetMD quotes veterinarian Susan O’Bell recommending a hospital-scale check for major discrepancies, and Dogs Trust also cautions that home weighing may be less accurate than veterinary weighing. If you change scales, note the change and establish a new baseline rather than treating the difference between scales as a real gain or loss. PetMD
Keep a dated log with the weight, unit and scale used. Note unusual circumstances such as movement during the reading or a change of scale. Record the veterinarian’s target weight and body condition score alongside the numbers so you can discuss the trend in context.

How often should you weigh your dog?
There is no single interval that fits every dog. Ask your veterinarian to set a schedule for your dog’s age, health and reason for monitoring. PetMD quotes veterinarians suggesting at least annual weighing for many dogs, with some owners checking every six months. Puppies need more frequent checks: PetMD reports a suggestion of at least every three to four weeks during the first four to six months. Dogs with chronic health conditions may need closer monitoring. For a veterinarian-supervised weight-loss plan, VCA advises weighing at least every other week until the dog reaches the goal weight. Weight alone cannot tell you whether your dog is at a healthy weight for its frame. Ask your veterinarian to establish a target weight and explain body-condition scoring. At home, assess the ribs by sight and touch, look for a waist from above, and check for an abdominal tuck from the side. For thick-coated dogs, touch may tell you more than appearance. At every exam, the FDA’s Carmela Stamper, a veterinarian in the Center for Veterinary Medicine, recommends that owners and veterinarians discuss the pet’s weight. A sudden or unexplained loss should not be treated as a reason to change your dog’s diet based only on a home reading: Stamper notes that being too thin or losing weight suddenly can be a sign of a health problem. Contact your veterinary team, particularly if the change comes with an appetite change.
