Scratching, exploring and play are normal feline behaviors, but stress, unmet needs and medical problems can also change how a cat behaves. Start by noting what is happening and arranging a veterinary check for a new or persistent change. Then make safe, appealing outlets for scratching, play, climbing, hiding and foraging easier to use.
First, check for an urgent medical problem
If your cat is straining to urinate or may be unable to pass urine, seek immediate veterinary care. A suspected urethral obstruction is a medical emergency, not a behavior problem. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains why it needs immediate attention in its guidance on urethral obstruction.
For other destructive behavior, contact your veterinarian if it is new, recurring, worsening or severe, or if your cat seems unwell or is injuring itself. Pain and illness can cause or contribute to changes in behavior, so it is important not to assume that stress is the only explanation. A veterinarian can assess your cat’s health and help shape a plan. See the American Animal Hospital Association’s guidance on cat anxiety.
Work out what is happening and when
“Destructive behavior” can mean several different things, and each calls for a different response. Note what your cat does, where it happens, when it happens and what occurs just beforehand. Also consider changes at home: a new person or pet, a changed routine, time alone, or tension with another cat.

- Is your cat scratching furniture, chewing objects, knocking things down, or eliminating outside the litter box?
- Does it happen in a particular room, at a particular time, or after a recognizable event?
- Has access to food, water, litter boxes, resting places or other resources changed?
- In a multi-cat home, could one cat be blocking another’s access or making it feel unsafe?
A simple log or a short video can help you describe the pattern to your veterinarian. Destruction that happens while a cat is alone does not, by itself, establish separation anxiety.
Why cats scratch, chew or damage things
Scratching, investigating and play are normal feline behaviors. A cat may scratch furniture because it is a useful surface in a convenient spot, not because it is trying to punish you. Boredom, stress or territorial marking may also contribute to unwanted behavior. Cornell’s overview of destructive behavior cautions against treating damage as revenge; identifying the behavior and providing an appropriate outlet is a more useful approach.

Whether anxiety is involved cannot be determined from damage alone. Look at the whole pattern and discuss significant changes with your veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose your cat from one sign.
Give scratching an acceptable outlet
Put a scratcher where your cat already scratches, then offer a stable alternative that suits the way your cat uses its claws. Some cats prefer a vertical post; others choose a horizontal pad. Try different surfaces and orientations instead of assuming that one material will appeal to every cat.

Give your cat regular opportunities to play, hide, perch and explore. Interactive play with a wand toy can offer an appropriate outlet for predatory behavior. A safe hiding place can let a cat retreat, while an elevated perch may suit a cat that likes to observe from above. Food puzzles or treat-dispensing toys can add foraging opportunities.

- Make sure hiding places and perches are accessible and stable.
- Count treats as part of your cat’s food allowance.
- Supervise a new puzzle or toy if your cat chews it or might swallow pieces.
- In a multi-cat household, provide key resources in separated, accessible locations and watch for avoidance or conflict.
The AAHA’s 2026 guidance on environmental enrichment for indoor cats emphasizes a safe place, separated key resources, and opportunities for play and predatory behavior. Enrichment helps meet behavioral needs, but these changes alone are not established as a cure for anxiety.
Avoid punishment and seek help if the behavior continues
Punishing or frightening a cat for scratching or chewing does not address why the behavior is happening and may add stress. Instead, reconsider the trigger and whether the safer alternative is easy to reach and appealing to your cat.
If the behavior persists despite practical changes, causes injury or creates major distress, ask your veterinarian about further assessment and behavior treatment. A veterinary behaviorist may be helpful. Depending on the cat and the situation, a professional plan may combine environmental changes, behavior modification and, in selected cases, medication guided by a veterinarian. Cornell discusses when veterinary or veterinary behaviorist help may be appropriate.
