To find a responsible Xoloitzcuintli breeder, start with referrals from the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America (XCA) or the American Kennel Club (AKC), then independently verify the breeder’s health records, puppy-raising practices, and written contract. A directory entry is a lead—not a guarantee. Before contacting breeders, decide whether the breed’s exercise, training, socialization, and care needs suit your home.

Decide whether a Xoloitzcuintli fits your home

The XCA describes Xolos as alert, athletic, loyal, and independently minded. It emphasizes that they need substantial time and patience, early and ongoing socialization, structure, obedience training, and daily mental and physical activity. As the club’s Buyer’s Guide 101 puts it, “Every breed has its good and challenging aspects; there is no perfect breed.” Consider your schedule, experience with dogs, and willingness to keep up with training before looking for a litter.

Xolos come in three sizes—toy, miniature, and standard—and two varieties: hairless and coated, according to the AKC breed profile. Hairless dogs may develop adolescent acne, and prolonged direct sun exposure calls for sunscreen. Discuss a particular dog’s skin and care needs with your veterinarian.

Where to find breeder leads—and what a referral means

The AKC identifies the XCA as the Xolo parent club and provides a breeder-referral contact. The XCA also offers buyer guidance and breeder-referral resources. Check the current pages for contact details, which can change.

Neither a referral nor a listing verifies a breeder for you. The XCA’s directory disclosure says it does not accept responsibility for individual breeders’ claims and advises buyers to do their own due diligence. The AKC likewise says it does not endorse individual breeders; referral contacts are club volunteers who can connect buyers with possible breeders. Club membership, registry paperwork, and directory placement alone are not proof of health or responsible breeding.

How to approach a breeder

Open with a short introduction rather than only asking whether puppies are available or how much they cost. The XCA suggests sharing where you live, how you found the breeder, and asking to talk about their dogs. Be ready to explain your lifestyle, living arrangements, expectations, and dog experience. A breeder may ask you to complete a questionnaire or provide references; those questions can help determine whether a particular puppy is a good match.

Aztec Sitting Xoloitzcuintli Whistle Clay Figurine
  • AZTEC DESIGN: Handcrafted clay figurine depicting the iconic Xoloitzcuintli, the ancient hairless dog revered in Aztec culture.
  • FUNCTIONAL WHISTLE: Features a built-in whistle with finger holes, making it both a decorative figurine and a playable instrument.
  • AUTHENTIC CLAY CONSTRUCTION: Crafted from terracotta-style clay with a warm reddish-brown finish and hand-etched surface details.

The XCA cautions that puppies are not available on demand and that finding one may take several months. That is a qualitative warning, not a national average or a promise about how long your own search will take. The club’s buyer guide does not establish current prices or availability figures.

Questions to ask before choosing a litter

Ask about the specific pairing, the dogs behind it, and how the breeder raises and places puppies. Request clear answers and records rather than relying on a broad assurance that the parents are healthy.

  • VERSATILE DISPLAY PIECE: Perfect for collectors of pre-Columbian art, Aztec culture enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates handmade decorative figurines.
  • What is the goal of this pairing? Ask what the breeder hopes to preserve or improve and why these two dogs were selected. The XCA says breeding should have a purpose beyond producing puppies to sell.
  • How old are the sire and dam, and what are their screening results? Ask to see results for each parent and check available records independently. The XCA notes that skeletal testing requires a dog to reach two years of age for acceptance into the OFA database, so age matters when interpreting a missing listing.
  • What is known about their pedigree and family history? Ask about health and temperament among ancestors, not only the two parents.
  • Have the dogs participated in conformation or performance events? If not, ask how the breeder assesses their suitability for breeding. Event participation by itself does not prove breeding quality.
  • How are the puppies raised and matched to homes? Ask what they have encountered and how the breeder evaluates individual temperaments when recommending a puppy.
  • What veterinary care and records will come with the puppy? Ask which care has been provided, including immunizations, and what documentation you will receive.
  • Can I speak with previous puppy buyers? Ask for references and what support the breeder provides after placement.
  • What does the contract require, and what happens if I cannot keep the dog? Read the agreement before paying or committing.

Verify the recommended health evaluations

The AKC lists four health evaluations recommended by the national breed club for Xolos: patella, hip, cardiac, and ophthalmologist evaluations. Ask for the results for both the sire and dam, and independently confirm records where available. A general statement that the parents are healthy is not a substitute for seeing the relevant results.

The XCA says skeletal testing requires a dog to be at least two years old for acceptance into OFA’s database. A younger parent may therefore lack an accepted listing because of age. Screening helps inform a decision; it does not guarantee that a puppy will never develop a health problem.

Assess puppy raising, socialization, and placement age

The XCA says socialization should start young and continue throughout a Xolo’s life. Ask for specific, age-appropriate examples of sounds, objects, people, places, and animals the litter has encountered. Find out what guidance the breeder will give you to continue that process at home.

The AKC says buyers generally should not expect a puppy before eight to twelve weeks, allowing time to mature and socialize with its mother and littermates. Ask the breeder why they have chosen the proposed placement age and what care and records will accompany the puppy.

Compare breeders on evidence, not a single signal

If you are speaking with more than one breeder, compare the information they can document and explain. Use the same questions for each conversation so you can assess the differences clearly.

What to compare What to look for
Health screening Results for the recommended evaluations for both parents, with records you can verify where available.
Breeding purpose and family history A clear reason for the pairing and useful information about the dogs’ pedigrees, health, and temperaments.
Puppy raising and socialization Concrete descriptions of what puppies experience, how temperaments are assessed, and how socialization will continue.
Buyer fit Willingness to answer your questions and assess whether your home and expectations suit the puppy.
Contract and support Written terms, a clear return or reclaim process, and an explanation of support after placement.
Veterinary care and references Transparent records for the puppy and an opportunity to speak with previous buyers.

These factors provide a more useful basis for comparison than price or show participation alone; the cited sources do not establish a price-based ranking of breeders.

Read the contract and return provisions closely

The XCA says a written agreement should protect the buyer, breeder, and puppy. Its buyer guide describes terms that may address health, communicable disease, immunization, age-appropriate spay or neuter requirements, and appropriate care. The AKC also describes responsible breeders as providing ongoing support and using contracts that may require them to reclaim a dog under specified conditions.

Read the exact agreement before committing. Check what the breeder promises, what you are required to do, how health concerns are handled, and what steps to take if you can no longer care for the dog. The XCA says a good breeder will take a dog back if its owner cannot care for it. Terms and remedies vary; the sources do not establish one universal contract or legal guarantee.
