Call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital before you leave, if you can do so without delaying urgent care. Explain what happened and follow their instructions. Keep your pet quiet, limit movement, and get another person to help if possible. For a small pet, choose a ventilated carrier or sturdy box with an opening wide enough to lower them in gently; for a dog that cannot walk or may have a spinal injury, ask the clinic how to move them and use firm support when feasible.
Before moving your pet
- Call the clinic or emergency hospital. Describe the injury or symptoms and ask where to go and how to handle your pet. Serious illness can involve breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, or possible poisoning, so do not rely on a generic handling routine; request case-specific directions. Veterinary first aid is temporary, not a replacement for professional care. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 Pet First Aid brochure puts it plainly: “First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care.”
- Arrange help if available. One person can handle the pet while another opens doors, prepares the vehicle, and speaks with the clinic.
- Keep the trip direct. Do not delay to buy equipment or attempt home treatment. If you are unsure how to handle a suspected serious injury, ask the veterinary team for instructions rather than attempting a complicated stabilization.
Keep handling calm and safe
Pain and fear can change an animal’s behavior. Even a normally gentle pet may bite when injured. Approach slowly, keep your face away from the mouth, and avoid hugging or unnecessary restraint. Keep the airway clear.
A muzzle is not appropriate in every situation. The VCA first-aid guidance for dogs advises using one only when it will not interfere with breathing and the dog is not vomiting. If breathing is difficult or your pet is vomiting, seek immediate veterinary guidance. For a cat, a towel or blanket may provide safer protection than an improvised muzzle; do not cover the nose or restrict breathing.
Choose transport based on your pet and the suspected injury
The safest practical option depends on your pet’s size, ability to walk, the suspected injury, how easily the container opens, and whether someone can assist. These are transport principles, not a diagnosis or a guarantee that any one carrier or stretcher suits every animal.

| Situation | Practical approach | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Small pet without an apparent spinal concern | Use a correctly sized carrier or sturdy, ventilated box. If possible, remove the carrier’s top and lower the pet in gently. | Avoid forcing the animal through a narrow opening. Keep the pet quiet and contained. |
| Cat | Use a carrier or sturdy box with broad access. A towel or blanket can help cover or gently guide the cat. | Do not obstruct breathing. If spinal injury is suspected, VCA recommends a large box; contact the clinic for directions. |
| Large dog that cannot walk | Ask another person to help. A sturdy blanket or coat may help maneuver the dog; a rigid improvised stretcher may be suitable when it can be used safely. | Move gently and keep movement low. Call the veterinarian for case-specific advice. |
| Possible spinal injury | Minimize movement and, when feasible, support the body on a rigid board or other suitable rigid surface. Keep the head and neck aligned. | Do not bend or twist the animal or attempt complex stabilization without veterinary guidance. |
VCA gives further transport guidance for dogs and cats. Household items may help when used safely; the guidance does not establish one commercial stretcher or carrier as right for every pet or injury.
Using a carrier, blanket, or support
Small pets and carriers
A carrier with a removable top can make loading less stressful than pushing an injured animal through a small front door. Remove the top if the carrier is designed for it, then lower the pet gently. A sturdy ventilated box is another option when it safely contains the animal. Keep ventilation unobstructed.

If multiple family members need to use it, you'd better to buy an adjustable style from TOMKAS , which can be easily used by both adults and children.
Large dogs and improvised support
For a large dog that cannot walk, get help rather than trying to lift or drag the dog alone. A blanket or coat can help maneuver the animal, and a rigid support may help keep the body steady. If you suspect a spinal injury, avoid flexing or twisting the body; keep the head and neck aligned and ask the hospital how best to transfer the dog.

When not to improvise
- Do not remove an object embedded in a wound. Leave it in place and ask the veterinary team what to do.
- Do not apply a bandage or splint unless it is safe and you know how. Improper stabilization can cause harm; the AVMA advises leaving it to veterinary professionals if you are unsure.
- Do not let a muzzle, blanket, or container compromise breathing. Keep the airway clear and seek urgent advice if breathing is affected.
- Do not apply routine warming advice to heatstroke. VCA says to keep an injured dog warm except in heatstroke; contact the emergency clinic for instructions.
