For a minor dog bite, wash the wound promptly and thoroughly with soap and running water, apply antibiotic cream, then cover it with a clean bandage. If the bite is deep or large, bleeding will not stop, affects a hand, foot, face, or head, or the dog may pose a rabies risk, seek medical help rather than relying on home care.
How do I clean a dog bite wound at home?
- Stop the bleeding. Press a clean, dry cloth firmly against the wound. If bleeding will not stop, seek emergency care.
- Wash it thoroughly. Rinse the wound with running water and soap as soon as possible. If rabies exposure is possible, the CDC advises washing immediately for 15 minutes. Do not delay washing while trying to identify or locate the dog. CDC rabies prevention guidance
- Cover a minor wound. After washing, apply antibiotic cream and cover the wound with a clean bandage, as the CDC dog-bite guidance advises. The NHS recommends gently patting the wound dry and covering it with a clean dressing: NHS animal-bite advice.
- Do not dig into the wound. If you think a tooth fragment, hair, dirt, or other material remains, get medical advice instead of probing deeply at home.
Antibiotic cream is part of minor-wound care; it does not prevent tetanus. Tetanus protection is a separate decision based on the wound and vaccination history.
Should I go to the doctor for a dog bite?
Get prompt medical assessment for a deep puncture, large wound, severe tear or crush injury, suspected material left in the wound, or a bite to the hand, foot, face, or head. Also seek advice if you are unsure whether the dog is vaccinated against rabies or whether the exposure could be risky. The NHS specifically flags bites to the hands, feet, face, or head for urgent advice; the CDC advises medical care for deep or serious wounds and infection concerns.
Go to emergency care or call your local emergency number if bleeding cannot be stopped, the wound is large or deep, pain is severe, you cannot use the affected area normally, or you feel faint or weak. The appropriate service and urgency pathway depend on where you live.

People who are immunocompromised or otherwise medically vulnerable should have a low threshold for professional advice. The CDC’s wildlife-bite guidance highlights particular concern for children younger than five, adults 65 or older, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems; that list is not a complete dog-bite risk rule. Do I need a rabies shot after a dog bite?
Wash the wound immediately and get urgent professional advice if the dog is unfamiliar, unavailable for assessment, unvaccinated, behaving strangely, or may have rabies. Whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed depends on the animal and the details of the exposure, as well as local rabies conditions. A clinician or public-health authority should make that assessment; a clean or small-looking wound does not answer the rabies question.

Do I need a tetanus shot after a dog bite?
The CDC classifies animal bites involving saliva as dirty or major wounds. A healthcare professional considers your vaccination history and the wound to decide whether a tetanus vaccine booster or tetanus immune globulin (TIG) is indicated. Topical or oral antibiotics are not recommended to prevent tetanus. CDC wound-management guidance for tetanus

What infection signs should I watch for?
Seek medical advice if you notice worsening redness, warmth, pain, or swelling; fluid or pus from the wound; an unpleasant smell; or fever or chills. These symptoms can indicate infection, and worsening symptoms need review even if the bite initially seemed minor. The CDC and NHS list infection concerns among reasons to get medical help: CDC dog-bite guidance and NHS animal-bite advice.

- Wound: its depth, size, bleeding, pain, and whether function is affected.
- Location: bites to the hand, foot, face, or head call for prompt assessment.
- Dog and exposure: whether the dog is known, available, vaccinated, and behaving normally affects rabies evaluation.
- Your health history: vaccination history matters for tetanus; medical vulnerability can lower the threshold for seeking care.
These are separate checks: caring for the skin at home does not determine whether rabies PEP or tetanus protection is needed. For further general first-aid detail, see Mayo Clinic’s animal-bite first-aid advice.
