Introduce a kitten and rabbits gradually: start with secure separation, progress to short supervised encounters only while both animals remain calm, and keep them apart whenever you cannot watch directly. Give the rabbit a protected retreat and stop at signs of fear, stalking, chasing, or aggression. Some pairs may not be safe together, even after peaceful meetings.
Prepare separate, secure spaces
Before introducing them, make sure the rabbit has an area the kitten cannot enter and the kitten has a separate safe space. Include room for the rabbit to move and a hide box or other retreat. Set up barriers so the kitten cannot climb in, tip them over, squeeze through, or reach the rabbit through the bars; the rabbit should not be trapped or have its exit blocked.
If the rabbit has just moved into your home, give it time to settle and become confident in its surroundings before beginning introductions. There is no universal schedule: House Rabbit Society describes adjustment as taking “days, weeks or months,” not as a guarantee or deadline (House Rabbit Society, “Rabbits and Cats”).
Introduce them in gradual stages
1. Start with protected exposure
Let the animals see and smell one another across a secure barrier or from adjacent enclosures. A neutral area may help reduce territorial pressure. Keep the rabbit’s hiding place available, and make sure the kitten cannot enter the rabbit’s protected space. Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund discusses adjacent enclosures and neutral territory; Vets4Pets gives a puppy crate as one possible arrangement for early nose-to-nose exposure. These are options, not a single required setup.

For any barrier, check that it is stable and that both animals can withdraw. A sturdy rabbit exercise pen or pet playpen can create separation, but suitability depends on its stability, spacing, escape prevention, and whether it leaves the rabbit room to move and access to a retreat. No specific product has been tested here.
2. Keep early meetings brief and calm
Stay close enough to intervene immediately. End the encounter while both animals are still settled, then try again later rather than extending a tense meeting. You can reward calm behavior if appropriate, but do not lure either animal into unwanted proximity with food or toys. The guidance supports gradual, supervised progression but does not prescribe a universal session length.

3. Increase access only after repeated calm encounters
When both animals have stayed calm through repeated protected sessions, you can cautiously increase their access in a space where the rabbit can retreat and the kitten can move away. Do not corner, restrain, or force the rabbit to remain near the kitten. Return to secure separation if either animal becomes fearful, defensive, fixated, or excited by chasing.
Watch for behavior that means stop
Do not allow stalking, chasing, swatting, biting, or forced contact to continue. House Rabbit Society advises stopping if the cat is aggressive or the rabbit is scared; Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund advises interrupting predatory behavior. A rabbit may bite or scratch when threatened, and a kitten may be especially vulnerable if it cannot escape a territorial rabbit. Cats’ mouths and claws can also injure rabbits, while rabbit teeth and nails can injure a kitten.

If an injury occurs, contact a veterinarian promptly. Cat bites and scratches can cause serious infection in rabbits.
Keep them separated whenever you cannot supervise
Use secure separate spaces overnight, when you go out, and any time you cannot watch the animals directly and intervene. Vets4Pets recommends separating them when direct supervision is unavailable until it is clear they are getting on safely. Scottish Government pet rabbit welfare guidance says not to leave rabbits alone with cats or dogs, even when the animals are familiar with each other.

Choose a setup that protects the rabbit’s retreat

Some pairs may not be safe together
Individual temperament, size, past behavior, and your ability to maintain secure separate areas all matter. Cats retain hunting motivations, and a kitten’s age does not establish that it will never chase as it matures. The available welfare guidance does not establish a reliable readiness test or guarantee that a particular pair can safely share space. If safe interaction cannot be achieved, maintain secure separation.
