Some cats and rabbits can share a home peacefully, but it depends on the individual animals. Introduce them gradually, let the rabbit choose whether to approach, provide a secure place to retreat, and supervise every interaction. Never leave a rabbit alone with a cat—even if they seem friendly. Stop and separate them if the cat stalks or chases, or if the rabbit shows ongoing signs of fear or stress.
How to tell whether a cat and rabbit may be suited to living together
Assess both animals rather than assuming a cat is safe because it is usually calm or a rabbit is safe because it is large. Cats retain predatory motivations, and a cat that stares, stalks, or chases should not have access to the rabbit. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) notes that cats may be more likely to feel predatory toward small rabbits; size alone does not establish that a pairing is safe. Young animals’ behavior can also change as they mature.
The rabbit must be able to move away and reach a secure hiding place. If the cat cannot be reliably prevented from pursuing the rabbit, keep them separated. Persistent rabbit distress can also make sharing unsuitable, even if no physical attack occurs. Guidance from the RWAF and House Rabbit Society emphasizes individual behavior, choice, and supervision.
How to introduce a cat to a rabbit safely
1. Let the rabbit settle first
Give a new rabbit time to become comfortable in the home before introducing the cat. Do not use the first days in a new environment to test how the animals react to each other. Let the rabbit establish a safe area and a normal routine before starting introductions. House Rabbit Society’s introduction guidance recommends allowing the rabbit to settle and letting the animals’ behavior guide the pace.

2. Set up a protected space with a real retreat
For early introductions, use a secure enclosure or barrier that prevents the cat from reaching through to the rabbit. The rabbit needs enough room to move and a hide box or other safe retreat that remains accessible. A secure rabbit exercise pen, rabbit hide box, or indoor pet barrier can help create a controlled setup for supervised sessions; none makes it safe to leave the animals together unsupervised.
Do not trap the rabbit in a way that removes its choice or treats a barrier as proof of compatibility. The RWAF points out that a cat may seem unafraid when a rabbit is confined, while the rabbit has no opportunity to approach or leave. Watch how both animals respond, and ensure each has a way to withdraw.

3. Start with brief, supervised contact
First let the animals become accustomed to each other’s smells and movements. Then try short, controlled sessions while staying close enough to interrupt immediately. Let the rabbit approach at its own pace; do not force contact or hold it in place. Provide a retreat for the rabbit and a way for the cat to move away.
Watch the cat for staring, stalking, chasing, or other predatory behavior. Interrupt and separate them if it appears. Continue only while both animals seem comfortable. Familiarization may take days, weeks, or months, according to House Rabbit Society; there is no universal timetable that proves a pair is ready.

4. Keep every interaction supervised
Stay present whenever the cat and rabbit share space, even after they seem familiar or friendly. Do not leave them alone together. A rabbit can be injured by contact that appears playful to a cat, and a familiar relationship is not a guarantee of safety.
How to tell whether a rabbit is comfortable or stressed
Look at the rabbit’s overall behavior and routine, not just whether it approaches the cat. A relaxed rabbit usually eats normally and may rest, stretch out, or approach familiar animals or objects voluntarily. A single retreat to hide is a normal response to fear and does not, by itself, prove a lasting problem.

| Possible comfort | Possible stress or fear |
|---|---|
| Eating normally | Reduced interest in food or changes in eating |
| Sitting or lying stretched out | Flattened ears, a hunched posture, or freezing |
| Approaching voluntarily | Agitation, jumpiness, aggression, or repeated escape attempts |
| Resting in a familiar space | Excessive hiding, lethargy, or disinterest |
| Usual grooming and toileting | Changes in grooming or toileting, rapid or heavy breathing, or repetitive purposeless behavior |
Frequent hiding, inability to reach a retreat, or changes to eating and toileting are more concerning than one brief retreat. Animal Welfare Victoria advises prompt veterinary advice for signs of stress; Scottish Government guidance also recommends contacting a vet if you are concerned. See Animal Welfare Victoria’s rabbit-keeping guidance and the Scottish Government’s guidance on normal behavior.

- The cat stalks or chases: End the session and prevent further access. If you cannot reliably keep the cat from pursuing the rabbit, maintain separation.
- The rabbit remains distressed: Stop contact if fear persists, even without an attack. Repeated hiding, reduced appetite, or other changes in normal behavior warrant attention.
- The rabbit cannot retreat: Change the setup before trying again. Contact through a barrier is not a fair test if the rabbit cannot choose to move away.
Some pairs may never be suitable housemates. Keeping them in separate areas is a responsible outcome when safety or the rabbit’s welfare cannot be maintained.

- ADJUSTABLE FOR YOUR SPACE: Multiple height sections allow the gate to adapt to different doorway heights, making it useful for bedrooms, kitchens, hallways and other indoor spaces. Tighten pressure points evenly during setup and periodically recheck the gate after regular use.
What to do if the cat scratches or bites the rabbit
Seek veterinary advice promptly after a scratch or bite rather than waiting to see whether it heals. House Rabbit Society warns that cat claws and mouths carry bacteria and that even a playful swat or bite can lead to a serious abscess.
Other household precautions
Keep clumping cat litter where the rabbit cannot reach it. House Rabbit Society warns that eating it can cause a dangerous intestinal blockage. Also, a cat is not a substitute for rabbit companionship: Animal Welfare Victoria recommends an appropriate rabbit companion and notes that rabbits instinctively fear animals such as cats.
