For early introductions, use a roomy, secure rabbit enclosure that lets the rabbit move and hide while keeping the kitten from reaching through. A baby gate or see-through fence can help separate the animals if it reliably prevents contact and neither animal can get around it. A carrier is for transport and handling, not a substitute for an introduction barrier. Keep encounters supervised, and stop if the kitten is aggressive or the rabbit is frightened.

These options have different jobs; the sources do not compare specific models or establish universal gate, pen, or bar dimensions. Choose based on the animals and your room layout rather than assuming every pen or gate is secure.
How to introduce a kitten to a rabbit
- Let the rabbit settle first. If the rabbit is new to your home, wait until it is confident and comfortable there before introducing the cat. Rabbit.org’s guidance on rabbits and cats, by Marinell Harriman, recommends allowing this adjustment.
- Set up a protected rabbit area. Use a roomy enclosure with bars or sides that prevent the kitten from reaching through. Provide space for the rabbit to move and a place to hide. Check for gaps, climbing or jumping routes, and ways the kitten could get around the barrier.
- Allow gradual familiarization. Keep the animals separated while they get used to each other’s movements and smells. Do not move forward until both appear comfortable; this may take days, weeks, or months, according to Harriman’s Rabbit.org article.
- Try short, supervised sessions. When both are comfortable, keep the kitten under close control—for example, held on a lap—and let the rabbit investigate at its own pace. Stay positioned to end the session promptly.
- Stop if either animal is distressed. Rabbit.org’s instruction is direct: “If kitty is aggressive or rabbit is scared, stop the interaction.” Slow the process or end contact rather than pressing on.
Can cats and rabbits live together?
Indoor house cats and pet rabbits can coexist peacefully with careful introductions and supervision, according to Rabbit.org. That general guidance is not a guarantee for every pair, and it does not establish kitten-specific outcomes. A kitten’s age alone does not show how it will behave around a rabbit. Cats with a high prey drive may need to remain separated from rabbits.
There is no universal timetable or promise that a particular pair will eventually share space. Let the animals’ behavior determine whether to advance, pause, or maintain separation.
