If you choose to introduce them, do it gradually and stop if either animal shows fear or predatory behavior. Some cats and rabbits should remain separated.
Choose a protected rabbit living area
Set up a rabbit-only room or a substantial enclosed section of a room where your rabbit can move normally, rest, eat, drink, use a litter area, and access enrichment. The rabbit’s space should be a usable living area, not a small crate serving as its sole accommodation.
The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWAF) recommends a single enclosed area of at least 3 m x 2 m and 1 m high for a compatible pair of average-sized rabbits, available at all times. This is a specialist welfare recommendation, not a universal legal minimum; larger rabbits or groups may need more space. See RWAF’s rabbit housing guidance.
Make the boundary secure
A closed room door is a straightforward way to keep the cat out. If you use an enclosure or pen, check that the cat cannot reach through it and that neither animal can get through gaps, climb over, jump over, or push it aside. The cited welfare guidance does not certify a particular gate or pen as cat-proof, so assess the actual setup rather than relying on a product label.

A rabbit exercise pen can help define the rabbit’s area, but check its dimensions and construction carefully. A small pen may not provide adequate living space, and no specific product is established as safe from cat access.
Give the rabbit an always-available retreat
Place secure hiding spots inside the protected area, where the cat cannot block the entrance. A hide box or tunnel with more than one opening lets a rabbit leave without being cornered. Keep the retreat available at all times, and never pull a frightened rabbit out of its hiding place. RWAF’s indoor housing examples include hides with two entrances and exits.

Set up a separate area for the cat
Give the cat a quiet place to rest and access to its own normal resources outside the rabbit’s protected zone. That may be a separate room or another cat-accessible part of the home. This is a practical arrangement rather than a prescribed layout: the essential point is that the cat cannot enter the rabbit area when you are not there to supervise.
Separation from a cat does not replace a rabbit’s need for companionship of its own species. RWAF discusses rabbits’ need for a safe area and companionship with other rabbits in its housing guidance.

Keep them apart when you are not supervising
Use a secure physical boundary whenever you cannot actively watch the animals. Do not leave a rabbit alone with a cat, even if they seem familiar or have previously been calm together. The Agriculture Victoria rabbit welfare code and the Scottish Government’s pet rabbit welfare guidance both advise against leaving rabbits alone with cats.
Introduce them gradually, if it seems appropriate
Introductions are optional. A rabbit may find a cat frightening, and a cat may retain predatory instincts even when it has lived peacefully with other animals. A rabbit must always be able to retreat; calm behavior in one meeting does not establish that the animals can safely share space unattended.

- Let the rabbit settle first. Wait until the rabbit is comfortable in its new home before arranging a meeting.
- Start with a protected rabbit. House Rabbit Society advises keeping the rabbit safely contained and providing a hiding box. Give both animals time to get used to one another’s movements and smells; this may take days, weeks, or months. See House Rabbit Society’s introduction guidance.
- Keep initial sessions short and supervised. Stay close enough to intervene immediately. Let the animals choose their distance; do not force contact or prevent the rabbit from retreating.
- End the session if either animal is uncomfortable. Separate them calmly if the rabbit seems frightened or the cat focuses, stalks, chases, or swats. Some animals may need permanent separation; RWAF notes that cats retain predatory motivations in its guidance on cats and rabbits.
- Restore the boundary as soon as supervision ends. A successful supervised meeting is not a reason to leave the animals together alone.
Watch for signs of rabbit stress
During and after any exposure to the cat, look for changes in the rabbit’s posture, behavior, or usual routines. Possible warning signs include:
- frequent hiding, restlessness, jumpiness, or nervousness;
- flattened ears, a hunched or frozen posture, aggression, or lethargy;
- rapid or heavy breathing, excessive grooming, or other grooming changes;
- less interest in food or changes in feeding or toileting;
- repetitive, purposeless behavior.
If signs appear during a meeting, calmly separate the animals and return the rabbit to its quiet, familiar protected area. Do not force another meeting. Agriculture Victoria advises seeking veterinary advice promptly when stress signs are detected; contact a veterinarian if concerning signs persist or you are worried about illness. Scottish Government guidance also identifies signs such as restlessness, nervousness, aggression, reduced interest in food, excessive grooming, and repetitive behavior in its rabbit welfare guidance.

Choose the arrangement that stays safe in your home
Fully separate living zones are the right choice if the cat shows predatory behavior, the rabbit does not remain relaxed, either animal cannot retreat freely, or you cannot maintain a secure boundary when supervision ends. Gradual supervised introductions may be considered only while both animals appear comfortable and you can separate them immediately. If those conditions are not met, keep the zones separate.
