If your cat seems distressed when you leave, first look for a pattern and arrange a veterinary assessment rather than assuming anxiety. A camera and behavior journal can help show what happens while you are away. With professional guidance, you can then make absences easier to manage, practice very brief separations at your cat’s pace, and add daily opportunities for play, foraging, and rest.
What separation-related distress can look like
Separation-related distress means distress triggered by the absence of an attachment figure. Possible signs include plaintive vocalizing, destructive behavior, house-soiling, eating less while alone, over-grooming or self-injury, pacing, panting, and restlessness. Stress or anxiety in cats can also involve hiding, social withdrawal, hypervigilance, dilated pupils, aggression, or twitching ears or tail.
None of these signs by itself proves separation anxiety. Pay attention to when the behavior starts, whether it happens specifically during absences, and what else has changed. A cat that stops eating, eliminates outside the litter box, or grooms excessively may have a medical issue or another source of stress.
How to work out what happens when you leave
Keep a simple journal of departure cues, when signs begin, what your cat does, and how long it takes to settle. Note whether the cat eats, rests, vocalizes, paces, or eliminates while alone. If feasible, record video or use a pet camera to observe the cat during an absence. A camera documents behavior; it does not treat anxiety.

Bring the notes or video to your veterinary appointment. A clear timeline can help the veterinary team distinguish absence-linked behavior from signs that occur at other times.
Why a veterinary assessment comes first
Contact your veterinarian before starting a behavior plan. Medical conditions can cause or contribute to changes in eating, grooming, elimination, or activity, and should be considered before assuming anxiety. Tell the veterinary team what you have observed and when it happens. They can assess possible medical causes and discuss whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist would help develop a comprehensive plan.

How to practice short separations safely
Gradual practice is a framework to discuss with your veterinarian or behavior professional, not a guaranteed cat-specific protocol. The goal is to keep each step comfortable rather than push through visible distress.
- Choose a comfortable starting point. You might begin by helping your cat settle on a familiar bed or mat while you remain nearby.
- Move away briefly. Take a small step away, then return while your cat is still comfortable. If needed, begin with a moment or two or a brief step out of view.
- Build only on comfortable repetitions. Gradually add distance, a barrier, or a little more time only when the current step goes well.
- Make it easier when stress appears. If your cat shows signs of stress, stop and return to a shorter, simpler step next time. Ask your veterinarian or behavior professional how to adjust the plan.
How to manage absences and meet daily needs
Where feasible, reduce or avoid absences that trigger distress while a treatment plan is getting started. A sitter or other suitable care arrangement may help; choose one that fits your cat and household. Keep daily routines predictable and make time for social interaction, play, exploration, mental stimulation, and rest.

Foraging activities can give cats ways to engage with food and explore. Cornell’s feline guidance describes play, foraging toys, and treat-delivery toys as enrichment options. If a toy uses treats, account for them within your cat’s daily food allowance. Enrichment supports welfare, but it is not a replacement for veterinary assessment or treatment.

A professional plan may combine management, behavior modification, and, in some cases, medication. Do not give your cat medication or supplements without veterinary direction. Medication choice and monitoring should be individualized; some behavior medicines have side effects, and some antidepressants take several weeks to reach their full effect.

VCA notes that cats experiencing stress may respond to synthetic pheromones. A diffuser or spray is an optional adjunct to discuss with your veterinarian, not an established cure for separation-related distress.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not scold or punish your cat for vocalizing, damaging items, or having accidents. These behaviors may reflect distress, and punishment can make the problem worse.
- Do not treat one sign as a diagnosis or assume your cat is being spiteful or disobedient.
- Do not force longer separations when your cat is showing stress. Make the practice easier and seek professional guidance.
