Potty training a Prague Ratter in an apartment works best with a predictable routine, close supervision and an immediate reward when your puppy uses the right spot. Decide first whether the long-term goal is outdoor toileting, an indoor toilet, or a planned transition between the two. If the elevator or walk to the street makes outdoor trips too slow for a young puppy, choose one fixed indoor toilet area instead.
The Prague Ratter, also called the Pražský Krysařík, is a breed of Czech origin, but available breed guidance does not establish a special potty-training method for it. The routine below applies general puppy house-training guidance to apartment living. The FCI breed record identifies the breed; the practical advice comes from general dog-training sources.
Choose the toilet arrangement before training
Pick the place you want your puppy to use and make it easy to reach. An apartment puppy may need to travel through a corridor, wait for an elevator and then reach the street; that delay can be difficult for a young dog to manage. The AKC discusses this apartment-specific challenge in its guidance on house training in an apartment.
| Setup | When it can help | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor spot | The route outside is quick and practical, and outdoor toileting is your goal. | You will need frequent trips and close attention to timing. |
| Training pad in one fixed place | A puppy cannot get outside quickly, you cannot make frequent trips, or outdoor access is temporarily limited. | Your puppy learns that an indoor surface is an acceptable toilet, so a later outdoor transition may take deliberate steps. |
| Indoor dog potty or tray | You need a defined indoor toilet area. | Consider the space it takes, how it will be cleaned and whether your puppy accepts the surface. The available sources do not rank products. |
| Patio grass or turf patch | You have a private balcony or terrace and want a grass-like surface. | Plan for safe access, waste handling and routine cleaning. |
There is no universally best setup in the available guidance. Weigh your long-term goal, the time it takes to reach the toilet, your puppy’s response to the surface, cleaning needs, available space and how consistently you can use the chosen spot. The AKC describes pads and other indoor options in its guide to potty training a puppy on pads and its overview of potty-pad training.

Build a routine around waking, meals and activity
Take your puppy to the chosen spot promptly after waking, after meals and play, and before bed. Offer frequent chances during the day, especially early in training. The Royal Kennel Club suggests taking a puppy out every hour or two during the first months; treat that as general guidance, not a guaranteed interval for every puppy. Its advice on a puppy’s home environment covers this schedule.
- On waking: Carry or leash your puppy directly to the toilet spot.
- After meals, naps and active play: Offer another opportunity rather than waiting for the puppy to ask.
- At the toilet spot: Stay with your puppy. If you like, use one short cue consistently.
- After success: Praise or give a small treat as soon as your puppy finishes in the right place.
- Before sleep: Make one last trip to the designated spot.
Watch for sniffing, circling or moving away from you; these can be signs your puppy needs to go. Keep your puppy in sight indoors, or use a gate or pen to limit unsupervised roaming. A crate can serve as a positive rest area if it is introduced properly and is large enough for the dog to stand and turn around, but it does not replace timely toilet breaks.

Set realistic expectations about holding time
The AKC offers a rough rule of thumb of about one hour of bladder holding per month of age, with sleeping puppies often able to hold it somewhat longer. This is an approximate general guideline, not a guarantee and not a Prague Ratter-specific measurement. Base breaks on your puppy’s observed needs and the practical limits of your route to the toilet. The AKC’s apartment-training guidance also emphasizes taking young puppies out often.
Handle accidents calmly
If you catch your puppy beginning to toilet in the wrong place, interrupt gently and take them to the chosen spot. If you find an accident afterward, clean it up without scolding or rubbing your puppy’s nose in it. The AKC warns that punishment can make a dog afraid to toilet in front of its person; its practical advice is, “If you have an accident, simply clean up and move on.” Read the AKC’s apartment house-training guide.

Pads, an indoor dog potty or tray, and a patio grass or turf patch can provide a consistent indoor option when apartment access makes timely outdoor trips unrealistic. Keep the toilet area in one fixed place. If you are moving a pad toward the door as part of a transition to outdoor toileting, move it gradually rather than changing its location abruptly. An indoor surface can be useful, but it also teaches your puppy that toileting indoors is permitted, so plan for the endpoint you want.
