If you found a stray, help it get home first
A found animal may have a family looking for it. Focus first on identifying and reporting the pet, then spread the word so the owner has a chance to come forward. The Best Friends guide points readers to PetFBI’s Found Pet: Action Plan for more detail on that process.
Finding a stray and rehoming a pet are different tasks: do not treat a found animal as available for adoption before giving its family an opportunity to locate it. Local animal-control procedures can vary; the guide does not specify requirements for particular places.
If rehoming is necessary, use several outreach channels
Once it is clear that a new home is needed, combine channels rather than relying on one listing. The guide suggests making a flyer, sharing the information on social media, posting copies in appropriate community locations, contacting shelters and rescue groups, and asking people in your own network to share it. Petfinder is one example of a general adoption website named in the guide.

- Organizational help: Ask shelters and rescues whether they can share a courtesy post or suggest local resources. Their ability to help is not guaranteed.
- Personal networks: Friends, neighbors, and colleagues can share the information and may help you learn more about interested people.
The guide offers these as examples, not as a measured ranking of which channel works best. A colorful “Adopt me” bandana on a dog’s walks is another optional way to attract attention; it is not a requirement or a guarantee of finding a home.
Build an accurate flyer or adoption listing
Make it easy for a potential adopter to understand who the pet is and whether their home might suit it. Include practical details, appealing qualities, and known limitations. Accuracy matters more than making the pet sound perfect.

- Pet’s name and a clear photo
- Appearance, size, and age
- Spay/neuter and vaccination information, when applicable
- Personality and appealing qualities
- Known needs or limitations, such as difficulty living with cats or small children
- A phone number and email address where you can be reached
Be specific about what you have observed rather than making promises about how the pet will behave in a new home. If health records are available, keep them ready to share with the eventual adopter.
Talk with potential adopters before arranging a meeting
Begin with a phone conversation before introducing the person to the animal. Keep it open and conversational, and give the prospective adopter a candid picture of the pet’s behavior and needs.

Be clear about challenges you have actually observed. The guide gives food guarding, biting, and destructive behavior as examples. If a behavior concern leaves you unsure about safe placement, consult a qualified trainer before proceeding. A conversation is also a chance to learn whether the person understands the pet’s needs and has a suitable home, not simply to secure a quick yes.
Meet in a neutral place and assess the interaction
A neutral location, such as a park, can be useful for an initial meeting. Watch how the prospective adopter approaches and interacts with the pet, and notice how the pet responds. Do not rush to decide during the meeting: if serious concerns remain, pause or decline the placement.

Make the handover prepared and documented
When you decide to proceed, give the adopter information and items that help the pet transition. The guide recommends sharing relevant medical and vaccination records, medications, and any special food or familiar supplies the animal already uses. A written agreement can serve as a safety net, but the guide does not prescribe a universal legal form or explain requirements for any particular jurisdiction.
Follow up over the next several weeks to see how the pet is settling in and whether the adopter has questions. Keep the exchange practical and focused on the animal’s ongoing care.
