There is no evidence-based list of 10 iron-rich foods proven to increase red blood cells in cats. Anemia is a sign of an underlying problem—not a diagnosis that can be treated by changing foods—and iron deficiency is uncommon in cats. If your cat may be anemic, contact a veterinarian rather than trying foods or supplements.
Why iron-rich foods are not an anemia treatment
Anemia means a lower-than-normal red blood cell count. It can result from blood loss, destruction of red blood cells, or reduced production of new cells. Each mechanism has different possible causes and treatments, so adding one nutrient cannot address anemia in general. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guide describes anemia as a symptom of disease, not a final diagnosis.
Iron is involved in red blood cell production, but iron-deficiency anemia is uncommon in cats. When it occurs, chronic blood loss is a more common explanation than too little iron in the diet. A very unbalanced diet can also contribute in some cases, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. The veterinary references reviewed do not identify foods shown to raise a cat’s red blood cell count.
What to do if your cat may be anemic
Arrange a veterinary assessment if you notice signs that could indicate anemia. A veterinarian can evaluate the cat and investigate the cause; treatment depends on what is driving the low red blood cell count. Merck’s guidance on nonregenerative anemia says iron treatment is for diagnosed iron deficiency, and any source of blood loss must also be corrected.

Signs can vary with the cause, severity, and speed of onset. They may include:
- Pale or yellow gums
- Weakness, lethargy, or poor appetite
- Rapid or difficult breathing
- Collapse
Severe or sudden signs, especially breathing difficulty or collapse, warrant urgent veterinary care. Do not wait to see whether a dietary change helps.

How to choose food for a cat with anemia
For routine feeding, choose a nutritionally complete and balanced cat food appropriate for your cat’s life stage and health needs. Food labeled complete and balanced is intended to provide the nutrients needed as a diet; it is not a treatment for anemia. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat nutrition guidance recommends discussing feeding with a veterinarian. If your cat is ill or has a diagnosis, ask the veterinarian whether the current diet is appropriate or whether a specific therapeutic diet is needed. Consider the food’s nutritional adequacy for the cat’s life stage, fit with diagnosed health needs, and the veterinarian’s recommendation—not an unverified iron ranking.

Foods and supplements to avoid using as a remedy
Do not give iron supplements or human foods to try to correct anemia unless a veterinarian directs you to do so. Supplementation without a diagnosed deficiency does not treat blood loss, red-cell destruction, or other causes, and it can delay the care the cat needs.
Some food exposures can damage feline red blood cells rather than help them. Cornell’s anemia guidance identifies onions among toxins that can cause anemia; Merck also lists onions and fava beans among food-associated toxic exposures. Keep these away from cats and contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat eats a potentially harmful food or substance.
