The Importance of Year-Round Parasite Prevention for Pets

Year-round parasite prevention helps address risks from heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks—but the right plan depends on your pet and location.

Yes—parasite prevention is generally a year-round conversation with your veterinarian. The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends year-round broad-spectrum control for dogs and cats, while the right product and schedule depend on the parasites in your area, your pet’s species, age, health, and exposure.

Why prevention can matter in every season

Parasite exposure does not stop on a single calendar date. Heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks can pose risks throughout the year, although the level and timing of risk vary with geography, weather, lifestyle, and the individual pet. CAPC’s General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats recommend: “Administer year-round broad-spectrum parasite control with efficacy against heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks.” CAPC General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats (updated April 24, 2025).

“Broad-spectrum” describes the parasites a preventive is intended to cover; it does not mean every product protects against every parasite. Products differ in coverage, species approval, formulation, schedule, and minimum age or weight. Choose one with a veterinarian using the current product label rather than assuming one medicine—or one plan—fits every pet.

What year-round prevention means for each parasite

Heartworm: prevention and testing are separate

CAPC recommends year-round heartworm prevention for dogs regardless of lifestyle and year-round preventives for cats. The American Heartworm Society also recommends year-round use of FDA-approved preventive medication. Doses need to be given on schedule; being mostly indoors or experiencing cold weather alone is not a reason to stop without veterinary advice. CAPC Heartworm guidance; American Heartworm Society: Preventives.

Prevention does not replace testing. The American Heartworm Society recommends annual heartworm testing for dogs even when they receive prevention year-round, as does the American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 client brochure. If a dose was late or missed, ask your veterinarian whether testing or other steps are needed before resuming or changing medication. American Heartworm Society: Heartworm Prevention for Dogs; AVMA: Heartworm Disease.

Fleas: seasonal patterns depend on location

CAPC recommends year-round flea control, but notes that flea prevalence and seasonality vary substantially by geography. Your veterinarian can tailor the plan to local conditions and your pet’s circumstances. Fleas can also affect people in an infested environment, including through bites and the transmission of zoonotic agents. A comb can help with coat checks, but it is not a substitute for prevention or treatment. CAPC Flea guidance.

  • Easy-to-use, Long-Lasting: PetArmor Plus tick and flea prevention for dogs comes with six (6) waterproof topical applications that provide your pet flea protection and control for six (6) months

Ticks: cold weather does not guarantee a break

CAPC says ticks may be active throughout the year and recommends consistent tick control for dogs and cats. Finding a tick on a pet receiving an acaricide (a product that kills or repels ticks) does not by itself show that the product has failed; ticks may still be encountered, and a heavy environmental burden can lead to reinfestation. Follow the product label and ask your veterinarian about local tick risks and any additional environmental measures. Pesticides should be used only for their approved purpose and according to their label. CAPC Tick guidance.

Intestinal parasites: prevention is only one part of care

CAPC recommends year-round broad-spectrum control and regular fecal testing. Its guidance recommends testing at least four times during the first year of life and at least twice yearly for healthy adult animals. A veterinarian may adjust the frequency according to health, exposure, travel, outdoor access, and contact with other animals. CAPC General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.

How to choose a preventive with your veterinarian

Bring your pet’s medical history and routine into the discussion. Compare options by what matters for that animal, not by a broad claim that a product “covers parasites.”

  • Coverage: Which parasites does the product prevent or treat, and which require a separate measure?
  • Species: Is the product labeled for your pet’s species? Never use a dog-labeled product on a cat, or vice versa, unless its label specifically allows it.
  • Age and weight: Does your pet meet the label’s minimum age and weight requirements?
  • Form and schedule: Is the formulation practical for your household, and can you reliably give it at the required interval?
  • Health and exposure: How do your pet’s medical history, local parasite activity, travel, outdoor access, and contact with other animals affect the plan?

CAPC and the American Heartworm Society describe available product categories and coverage, but there is no universally best product established by that guidance. The veterinarian’s recommendation should match the pet, and the product’s current label governs use. American Heartworm Society: Preventives; CAPC General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.

Keep prevention connected to exams and testing

Preventive medication is not a substitute for veterinary care. CAPC recommends preventive examinations at least every 6 to 12 months, annual heartworm testing for dogs, and fecal testing at the intervals described above. Your veterinarian can adjust the plan as your pet’s health, routine, or exposure changes. CAPC General Guidelines for Dogs and Cats; CAPC Heartworm guidance.

If year-round broad-spectrum control cannot be maintained, ask your veterinarian about CAPC’s alternative testing and treatment framework. It is a veterinary planning discussion, not a reason to improvise a stop-and-start schedule on your own.
