Prepare a quiet, secure retreat before the celebration starts, keep food, alcohol, marijuana, medications and fireworks out of reach, and arrange early outdoor breaks. These steps reduce the chance of panic, escape or accidental ingestion. If your pet may have eaten something hazardous, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly.
How to prepare your pet before New Year’s Eve
Do the setup before guests arrive or fireworks begin. A frightened animal may be harder to settle once the noise starts.
Make a familiar, quiet retreat
Choose a room away from outside noise, ideally one with few or no windows. Put in familiar bedding or blankets and, if suitable, toys. Close windows and use a television, music or white noise to help mask sounds. Cornell’s fireworks guidance recommends preparing a safe space and using sound distraction.
Use a crate only if your dog is already comfortable treating it as a safe place; don’t introduce confinement as a new response to panic. A familiar food toy may provide enrichment if it suits your pet’s diet, but it is not a guaranteed way to stop fear.

Reduce the chance of a runaway
Noise-frightened dogs may bolt and become lost or injured. Check that collar identification is legible and microchip records are current, and secure doors and yard gates. Exercise your dog and offer a bathroom break earlier than usual. If your dog must go outside after fireworks begin, use a leash even in a fenced yard. Cornell explains these precautions in its guide to fireworks and thunderstorm fear.
Ask your veterinarian about serious noise fear
Trembling, hiding, pacing, panting, drooling, vocalizing and attempts to escape can be signs of distress. If your pet has significant noise fear, speak with your veterinarian well before the holiday about suitable options. Use any prescribed medication only as directed; don’t give a human medication, share a prescription between pets or exceed the veterinarian’s instructions. If advised, test a prescribed treatment on a quiet day rather than for the first time during the celebration. A veterinary behaviorist may be appropriate when distress remains difficult to manage.

Keep party food, alcohol and other hazards out of reach
Keep your pet on its normal food or pet-safe treats. Ask guests not to feed the animal, secure leftovers and close garbage containers. Put alcohol, marijuana products and guest medications somewhere pets cannot reach them. The ASPCA’s New Year safety guidance specifically warns about alcohol, marijuana, party food and medications.
For dogs, Cornell lists hazards including chocolate and caffeine, grapes and raisins, xylitol, onions and garlic, fatty foods, bones, salty snacks, alcohol, macadamia nuts and yeast dough. Its holiday hazards guide for dogs also discusses other risks. This is not an exhaustive list or a safe-versus-unsafe guide for every species: the substance and amount can matter, and an item not listed here is not necessarily safe for your pet.

How to keep your pet calm during New Year’s fireworks
Keep your pet in the prepared retreat and check on them calmly. Let a frightened cat stay indoors during the height of the fireworks. Don’t punish fearful behavior or force an animal to approach the noise. A familiar toy or suitable treat may help occupy some pets, but treat it as an optional distraction, not a treatment for severe anxiety.
An anxiety vest may help some animals, but results vary. Ask your veterinarian about options in advance if your pet’s fear is intense. The ASPCA’s fireworks safety page discusses veterinary advice and optional calming measures.

Keep fireworks and debris away from pets
Do not let pets near fireworks while they are being used. Fireworks can frighten animals, and eating fireworks or debris can be dangerous. If you set off fireworks at home, clean the area thoroughly before allowing your dog back into it. Keep cats indoors while fireworks are active.

Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly if you suspect your pet has swallowed fireworks, food, medication, alcohol, marijuana or another hazardous substance. Don’t wait for symptoms or try to induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional tells you to. Have the product or food packaging, the estimated amount and the time of exposure ready if you know them; the professional can advise you on what to do next.
