How can I tell if my cat is stressed by fireworks?
Common signs include hiding or withdrawing, looking startled, fearful body language, trying to escape, or becoming unusually dependent on you. Cats Protection’s 2023 report found that 64% of owners who had witnessed their cat experience fireworks said the cat showed at least one sign of stress. The same report said 28% of cat owners reported obvious fear toward noises such as thunder or fireworks. These are separate survey findings with different denominators, so they should not be combined into a single estimate.
Should I keep my cat indoors during fireworks?
Yes. Keep your cat inside after dark when fireworks are expected, and secure windows, doors and cat flaps so a frightened cat cannot bolt outside. If your cat will be indoors longer than usual, make sure they can reach a litter tray, food and fresh water.

Check for unsafe hiding places such as spaces behind appliances or inside furniture where a cat could become trapped. Block access to hazards while preserving safe places your cat can choose to use.
Where should my cat hide?
Make a familiar retreat available before the noise starts. A cardboard box or the cat’s usual bed with blankets is enough; a purchased covered bed is not necessary. Put it somewhere quiet and safe, and let your cat decide whether to use it. Some cats also prefer a higher resting place, provided it is stable and secure.

Hiding is a normal response to fear. Don’t drag your cat out or block a safe hiding place simply to make them visible.
Should I shut my cat in one room?
Not automatically. Some cats may feel more stressed if confined, so Cats Protection advises allowing access to their usual areas when it is safe to do so. Secure the home and make suitable hiding options available rather than imposing a new space restriction on every cat.

If your cat already settles comfortably in a particular room, you can make that area available as a retreat. Keep essentials within reach and leave the cat room to choose where they feel safest.

- Cover flashes: Draw curtains or blinds before fireworks begin.
- Soften sudden sounds: Try steady radio or television at a comfortable volume if your cat seems relaxed with it. Avoid content with abrupt loud noises.
- Keep the atmosphere calm: Go about your usual routine where possible. If background sound seems to upset your cat, turn it off rather than increasing the volume.

How should I comfort my cat?
Stay calm and let your cat choose whether they want attention. A frightened cat may prefer to hide; picking them up, cuddling them or repeatedly approaching can make them more fearful. If your cat comes to you, offer quiet reassurance without forcing contact.
Can a pheromone diffuser help?
A cat pheromone plug-in diffuser is an optional aid, not a guaranteed fix. When should I call the vet about fireworks stress?
Contact your veterinarian if your cat has severe reactions to noise or remains stressed after the fireworks. A veterinarian can advise on an individual plan and may refer you to a qualified behaviourist. VCA notes that a veterinarian may also discuss anti-anxiety medication for pets with serious noise reactions. Do not give medication or supplements unless your veterinarian directs you to do so.
