Handy Hank is a soft, fabric-covered hand on a stick that Best Friends Animal Society used to help a shy cat named Starling get more comfortable with touch while keeping a little distance between cat and caregiver. In the organization’s April 28, 2026 story, Starling learned to tap the hand for a treat before progressing to simulated petting and brushing. Her later confidence is an individual story, not a guarantee or a measured result for other cats.
What Handy Hank is—and how it was used
Best Friends describes Handy Hank as a fabric-covered hand attached to a stick. The distance it creates let caregivers introduce touch without immediately asking Starling to accept a person’s hand close to her body. The tool was also used to simulate petting and move food bowls. Its hand section can be replaced with other tools, such as a brush, to introduce objects a cat might encounter in an adoptive home.
The account is a feature story about one cat at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, not a published test of a general training protocol. It does not report a success rate or clinical guidance. Read the Best Friends story by Cayla Cavalletto.
How Starling’s introductions progressed
- Build an association: Caregiver Isaac DeBlasio paired the cue “touch” with a favorite treat.
- Reward a small interaction: Starling received a treat for tapping Handy Hank.
- Introduce simulated petting: After that step, Hank was used to stroke Starling’s back.
- Introduce a brush: The next phase used a brush along her coat, with treats.
This sequence describes what caregivers did with Starling; the story does not establish that every shy cat should follow the same steps or pace.

What the story reports about Starling afterward
Best Friends reports that Starling later approached visitors, rubbed against hands or legs, and enjoyed stroller rides around the sanctuary. Those are reported outcomes for Starling, not quantified evidence that Handy Hank will produce the same change in another cat.
What Handy Hank does—and does not—tell a prospective adopter
The story presents the tool as part of efforts to help a shy shelter animal become more comfortable and support adoption. It does not identify a brand or retail version of Handy Hank, compare products, or recommend a particular brush. A consumer grooming brush is not the same thing as the training aid, and buying one alone does not replicate the sanctuary’s approach.

Best Friends’ article also encourages readers to foster, adopt, or advocate for shelter animals. Its broader message is that patient, supportive care can be part of helping an individual animal feel safer, while Starling’s experience should not be treated as a promise about other cats.
