Fun Things to Do With Your Dog can be as simple as a sniff-filled walk, a short training game, or a few treats hidden around the room. Choose activities to suit your dog’s interest, age, health, and comfort; a long or strenuous workout is not the goal for every dog.

Indoor activities with little or no special gear

Play “find it”

Say “find it” as you toss a treat nearby, then praise your dog for finding it. Once the game makes sense, hide treats in easy spots and gradually make the search a little harder. Keep track of where you place them so your dog can find them all.

Try hide-and-seek

If your dog understands cues such as “stay” and “come,” ask them to stay while you hide nearby, then call them to find you. Make the first hiding places easy and reward the search with praise or a treat.

Practice a few cues or tricks

A brief, upbeat training session is a shared activity as well as a chance to practice familiar cues or learn a simple trick. Stop or switch activities if your dog loses interest; keep the session comfortable rather than turning it into a test.

Make a simple obstacle route

Arrange stable boxes or chairs to create a route for your dog to walk around or through. Keep it low-impact and appropriate for your dog’s size and physical condition; skip jumps that could be unsuitable for their age or health.

Turn a meal into a search

The ASPCA’s Canine DIY Enrichment page says, “Every meal is an opportunity for enrichment, and food puzzles are a great way to slow down your dog’s eating and provide mental stimulation.” Try kibble in a muffin tin, nested boxes, or paper rolls, or hide it in a snuffle mat. You can make a simple version using a high-pile bathroom mat or fleece strips secured to a rubber mat; buying a special mat is optional. Supervise DIY puzzles and remove any material your dog tries to eat.

Weave around chairs

Set chairs or other stable household objects far enough apart for your dog to follow you between them. Guide them through at a comfortable pace and keep the route clear of anything that could slide or tip.

Outdoor activities and open-space games

Take a walk with time to sniff

A walk can be the activity, without a destination or a brisk pace. When the setting allows, give your dog time to investigate scents. The ASPCA notes that sniffing can be stimulating and calming, and the AKC includes walks among ways to spend time together.

Play fetch

Choose a suitable open area and use a toy your dog can safely carry. Keep the game at a pace your dog handles comfortably and take a break or stop if they seem uncomfortable or tired.

Explore a hiking trail or new neighborhood

Try agility or another dog sport

Agility is a structured obstacle-course activity for dogs and handlers who enjoy working as a team. The AKC’s dog sports guide describes options beyond agility, too. Start with an appropriate beginner activity; local classes and suitability vary.

Build a trick routine or try a class

If your dog enjoys learning alongside you, put a few tricks together into a short routine, explore canine freestyle, or look for a dog-friendly fitness or yoga class. These are optional ideas, not requirements, and the availability and suitability of classes depend on where you live and your dog.

When running or cycling needs more preparation

Running or cycling alongside a dog is more demanding than a sniff walk or a short game, so it is not a default fit for every dog. The AKC recommends adding running gradually and getting veterinary advice if you are unsure whether your dog is ready. Its fitness guidance also advises tailoring activity to age and physical condition; young puppies should not be pushed into strenuous exercise.

Ask your veterinarian before setting a new strenuous goal if your dog has a health condition or orthopedic history, or if you are uncertain about their fitness. Increasing intensity too quickly can cause soreness, strains, or injury. An older ASPCA outdoor guide also emphasizes conditioning gradually and bringing water and a travel bowl; its specific age and breed thresholds should be treated as legacy guidance, not universal rules.

Keep activities comfortable and safe

  • Choose activities to match your dog’s age, health, fitness, and interest. Breed and age can also affect what kinds of activity are suitable, according to the AKC.
  • Build up strenuous activity over time rather than making a sudden jump in duration or intensity.
  • Supervise household-material food puzzles and take away anything your dog tries to ingest.
  • On outdoor outings, plan for water and breaks, keep your dog cool, and avoid exercising in extreme heat.
  • Contact a veterinarian if your dog has difficulty breathing or shows other signs of illness during activity.

Choose an activity for the day you have

For a quiet indoor day, try “find it,” a food puzzle, or a short trick session. If you have room to move, set up a simple route or weave around chairs. Outdoors, choose between a sniff walk, fetch, or a more structured outing according to your dog’s comfort and fitness. You do not need special equipment to begin: a few treats, household objects, and your attention can make an ordinary day more engaging.
