Another cat may be making the litter box feel unsafe by blocking access, chasing or ambushing your cat, or creating territorial stress. First arrange a veterinary check to rule out illness; then make the boxes easier to reach safely and address any conflict gradually.
How another cat can make a litter box feel unsafe
A cat does not have to be visibly attacked to avoid a box. Another cat may wait near the entrance, block the route, chase the cat on the way in, or ambush it as it leaves. Cornell’s Feline Behavior Problems: House Soiling notes that being terrorized near or in the box can make a cat afraid to use it.
Watch what happens around the box, not just whether the cats fight. One cat may stare, follow, wait, or occupy a narrow passage without a dramatic confrontation. A covered box can also limit visibility and leave a cat with fewer ways to escape if another cat approaches.
Rule out a medical problem first
Urinary, digestive, mobility, and other health problems can make toileting painful, urgent, or difficult. A cat may not look ill even when a medical issue is present, so do not assume that house-soiling is purely behavioral. Contact a veterinarian for an examination and any appropriate tests. Straining, blood in the urine, signs of pain, or a major behavior change warrant prompt veterinary advice.

Work out which cat and what is happening
In a multi-cat home, first identify which cat is eliminating outside the box. If you cannot tell, a camera may help show who approaches, uses, or blocks a box. Temporary separation may clarify the pattern in some homes, but it is not a substitute for a veterinary workup.
Keep a brief record of where and when urine or stool appears, which boxes each cat uses, household changes, and any blocking, chasing, or waiting near a box. VCA’s Cat Behavior Problems – House Soiling identifies household relationships and the onset and pattern of elimination as useful details for a behavior history.

Check whether it is spraying or toileting
Urine spraying is territorial marking, which is different from ordinary urination outside the box. Cornell says cats may spray when they perceive a threat to their territory, including when a new cat enters the home or outdoor cats are nearby. Posture, location, and the pattern of urine can help distinguish marking from other house-soiling, but a veterinarian can help assess what is happening and rule out medical causes.
Make the boxes safer and easier to reach
Provide enough boxes in separate places
Cornell gives the common recommendation of one box per cat, plus one. Put boxes in separate, accessible locations rather than clustering them together: several boxes side by side may still be guarded as one resource. Avoid noisy or busy spots, and choose locations where one cat cannot control the only route in or out.

Improve visibility and escape options
If a cat may be ambushed, try an uncovered box that lets it see its surroundings and leave in more than one direction. Consider the cat’s size and mobility when choosing the box and its entry. Keep boxes clean; Cornell notes that most cats prefer unscented litter. If you suspect the cat dislikes the box or litter, try a suitable alternative and transition gradually, paying attention to what that individual cat accepts.
Clean soiled areas appropriately
Use an odor-neutralizing cleaning approach suited to the affected surface. Cleaning may help reduce repeated use of a soiled spot, but it does not resolve illness or conflict between cats.

Reduce conflict with a gradual plan
For an introduction or reintroduction, begin with separate territories. Each cat should have its own litter, food, water, bedding, and other resources. Then progress gradually rather than forcing the cats to share space before they are ready. VCA’s Treating Aggression Towards Other Household Cats describes separate resources and gradual behavior modification as part of addressing household cat aggression.
A pheromone diffuser is sometimes used as a possible aid while cats adapt during introductions, but it is an adjunct—not a proven cure for litter-box avoidance. If aggression is active or house-soiling continues, ask your veterinarian about a structured separation and reintroduction plan or referral to a veterinary behavior professional.

Choose changes for the problem you observe
Use practical features rather than assuming a product will solve the problem: a box should suit the cat’s size, mobility, visibility needs, and escape routes; litter should be acceptable to that cat in scent and texture; a camera should show who approaches or blocks the box; and a cleaner should be appropriate for the surface. These considerations help you evaluate options, but no box, litter, camera, or cleaner can be expected to fix every case.
