Redirected aggression happens when a cat becomes highly aroused by something it cannot reach—such as an outdoor cat visible through a window or a sudden loud noise—and attacks a nearby person or animal instead. Give the cat space, avoid handling or punishment, and separate household cats safely if needed. Sudden aggression can also signal pain or illness, so contact a veterinarian, especially if the behavior is new, severe, or recurring.
Why did my cat suddenly attack me?
A cat may redirect an attack toward whoever is nearby after becoming aroused or frustrated by a stimulus it cannot directly reach. The trigger can be a sight, sound, or conflict. Cornell lists loud noises, seeing an outdoor or stray cat through a window, and an altercation with another household cat as examples. VCA notes that another cat is a common trigger, but other sights, sounds, or sources of discomfort can also raise arousal or anxiety.
The attack may seem to come without warning because the original trigger is elsewhere—or has already disappeared by the time you notice the cat’s behavior. Not every sudden attack is redirected aggression: pain and other medical problems can contribute, and a veterinarian can help assess the cause.
What should I do during an episode?
- Keep your distance. Do not reach for, touch, pick up, or corner the aroused cat. VCA’s guidance is: “First and foremost, you must avoid the cat until it calms down.”
- Do not punish the cat. Avoid shouting, spraying water, or physical punishment. These responses can increase fear or anxiety and worsen aggression.
- Separate cats safely if they are fighting. Give each cat a safe area and avoid putting your hands between them or trying to force contact. If you can safely confine a cat, keep it there until it is calm.
- Wait for calm before considering contact. Food acceptance and relaxed behavior can be useful signs, but do not rely on a fixed timetable. If you are unsure whether it is safe to proceed, ask your veterinarian.
Separation may be needed for minutes, hours, or, in some cases, days. VCA warns: “The biggest mistake that owners make in trying to resolve this problem is to try and bring the cats together too soon.”

How can I find and reduce the trigger?
Think about what the cat may have seen, heard, smelled, or encountered just before the episode. Look for a nearby window, outdoor animal, loud noise, or recent conflict between household cats. Reducing exposure may help prevent another episode, though environmental changes are not guaranteed to solve the problem.
- If an outdoor cat at a window appears to be the trigger, close a shade or use blinds or shutters to block the view.
- Keep your cat out of rooms where trigger encounters are likely, if practical.
- Where possible, reduce animals’ access to the property if they repeatedly provoke your cat.
- Prevent aggressive interactions among household cats while you work out a safe plan.
How should I reintroduce cats after a fight?
Wait until both cats are calm before attempting a gradual reintroduction. Keep enough distance that they remain relaxed, and build positive associations with being near one another. If a cat will not eat during an introduction, it may be too anxious or too close to the other cat. Do not push the process; a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist can help tailor a plan, particularly after a severe attack.

Could a medical problem be causing the aggression?
Yes. Cornell advises checking for a medical cause when addressing aggression. Possible contributors it names include hyperthyroidism, osteoarthritis, dental disease, and problems affecting the central nervous system. VCA also recommends veterinary examination when household aggression is concerning because an underlying medical condition may contribute. Contact your veterinarian about new, sudden, or worrying aggression rather than assuming it is behavioral.

Ask your veterinarian about referral to a veterinary behaviorist if aggression is severe, persists, or cannot be managed safely. Medication may be useful in some cases, but it should be considered only with veterinary guidance and, where appropriate, alongside behavior and environmental changes.
