Hamsters should have fresh, clean water available at all times, with the water renewed daily. There is no single exact amount every hamster must drink: a veterinary reference gives about 10 mL per 100 g of body weight as an average for an adult-sized hamster, while recorded intakes vary by species and sex. Treat that figure as a guide, not a quota.
How much water should a hamster drink each day?
Veterinary Partner (VIN) gives an approximate average of 10 mL of water per 100 g of body weight for an average adult-sized hamster. It is a reference point, not a precise prescription for an individual pet. A hamster drinking less than that amount is not necessarily ill, and you should not try to make one drink a fixed volume.
Older measurements compiled in the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of the Hamster chapter show why one number cannot describe every hamster:

These are historical, study-specific measurements reproduced in a reference chapter, not current population averages or targets for pet hamsters. The sources do not establish one universal daily requirement for all pet hamsters, including Syrians.

How to provide water reliably
Keep the source accessible and make sure it works. The Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department advises keeping clean, fresh water available at all times, changing it daily, and washing the bottle frequently. Merck Veterinary Manual likewise says fresh water must always be available and recommends frequent cleaning—usually daily—and checking the sipper for blockage.
- Refill or replace the water every day.
- Clean the bottle or bowl regularly and keep the drinking tip clean.
- Check daily for leaks, a blocked sipper, or another problem that could prevent drinking.
- Position the source so your hamster can reach it comfortably.
Choose a bottle or bowl your hamster can use
Bottles are a practical option, but a bowl can also be used. Merck allows either; government and RSPCA guidance describe bottles. Choose based on whether your hamster can drink reliably and whether the water stays clean, rather than assuming one format suits every animal.

The RSPCA prefers a bottle with a valveless sipper tube. It notes that hamsters cannot apply strong suction and may struggle with the resistance of a traditional ball-valve sipper. A young, old, or sick hamster may have particular difficulty. Whichever source you use, check that water flows and that your pet can reach it without strain.

Consider a change in drinking alongside your hamster’s usual habits and other signs of health; water intake alone does not identify a diagnosis. Contact a veterinarian if your hamster seems unwell. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service lists lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal breathing, and abnormal or absent urine or droppings among signs for which to seek medical help. The RSPCA advises contacting a vet immediately if a hamster starts eating less, its droppings become moist, or its hindquarters become soiled.
