Keep rabbits out of direct sun, give them shade and ventilation, and make clean, cool water easy to reach. Watch for drooling, panting, short shallow breaths, weakness, or unusually warm, red ears. If you suspect heatstroke, call a veterinarian immediately and begin gentle cooling while arranging care.
Why hot weather is risky for rabbits
Rabbits can overheat, and air temperature is only part of the risk. Humidity, direct sunlight and radiant heat, and still air can make conditions more dangerous. Wild rabbits avoid the hottest part of the day by retreating to cooler burrows; pet rabbits depend on you to provide a shaded, well-ventilated place to rest.
Temperature guidance differs by source and context, so treat the figures as welfare guidance rather than one universal cutoff.

These ranges should not be collapsed into a single safe-temperature line. Assess the rabbit’s surroundings as well as the thermometer, and act promptly if the rabbit shows signs of distress.

How to keep a rabbit cool
Provide dependable shade and shelter
Keep the enclosure out of direct sunlight and check its position as the sun moves. Give your rabbit a secure shaded retreat; an umbrella, towel, tarpaulin, tunnel, or cardboard box can help provide cover. Avoid greenhouses, conservatories, and other glass buildings, which can heat up quickly.
Keep air moving without forcing a draft
Ensure the housing is ventilated and dry. If you open a window or door, maintain security and avoid creating an uncomfortable draft. Where there is little natural breeze, RSPCA Australia suggests a small battery-operated fan. Position it so your rabbit can move away from the airflow.

Make cool, clean water easy to reach
Offer extra water in hot weather. RSPCA Australia recommends providing more than one source, such as a bowl and a bottle, checking that bottle spouts are not blocked, and changing the water at least twice daily. A water bowl should be stable and kept clean. UK RSPCA summer advice also recommends giving rabbits extra water in warmer weather.
Offer a wrapped frozen bottle
UK RSPCA summer advice suggests freezing a plastic bottle that is only partly filled, wrapping it in a towel, and placing it in the exercise area so rabbits can lie against it. Keep it out of the shelter, where a leak could make the resting area wet.

Check the setup and coat
Monitor the temperature where your rabbit is housed, particularly during hot spells, and check that shade remains effective through the day. Regular grooming to remove dead hair is also included in UK RSPCA summer advice. The organization recommends outdoor exercise access only when the weather is suitable, with shade as temperatures approach 20°C or when it is sunny; this is its exercise guidance, not a universal heatstroke threshold. Fits or seizures and loss of consciousness can indicate severe progression. Treat suspected heatstroke as an emergency and contact a veterinarian immediately.
What to do if you think your rabbit has heatstroke
- Call a veterinarian immediately. Do not wait to see whether the rabbit improves on its own.
- Move the rabbit or its enclosure to a cooler, secure, shaded place if you can do so safely.
- Begin gentle cooling while arranging veterinary help. Offer small amounts of cool drinking water, gently wipe cool water on the ears, and place a damp towel over the enclosure. UK RSPCA summer advice also recommends wrapping a suspected affected pet in a cool, damp towel.
- Do not pour water over the rabbit. Home cooling is not a substitute for veterinary assessment.
Choosing practical cooling aids
Shade, ventilation, accessible water, observation, and prompt veterinary care are the essentials. A thermometer can help you monitor the housing temperature; a carefully placed small fan may help where natural airflow is limited; and a wrapped frozen bottle is a source-backed cooling option. No cited guidance establishes that a branded cooling mat is necessary or superior, and the sources do not provide head-to-head product testing. Choose any aid based on whether it improves the setup safely and lets the rabbit move away or choose where to rest.
