The best litter box for a small apartment is the one that fits the available spot without leaving your cat too little room to turn, dig, and enter comfortably. Measure the box’s full exterior—and any room needed to open or clean it—then check interior dimensions and access style before choosing. The six models with published dimensions below offer different compromises; there is no universally best pick without knowing your cat and the space.
How to choose a litter box for a small apartment
Measure the location and the whole unit
Measure the floor area where the box will sit, then compare it with the product’s exterior dimensions. Leave room for any access, opening, or cleaning the design requires; an automatic unit may need more clearance than its footprint alone suggests. Also account for the route your cat will use to reach it.
Make sure the cat has usable space
Outside dimensions do not tell you how much room the cat has inside. Cats.com advises choosing a box at least as long as the cat from nose to tail and wide enough for the cat’s body length. That is publisher guidance, not a veterinary standard established here. A box that is too small can restrict turning and digging.
Choose access for your cat, not just for scatter control
Top-entry boxes may help contain litter scatter, but a cat must be able to climb in and out comfortably. Edmonton Humane Society cautions that jumping through a small opening can be inconvenient or painful, particularly for older cats. Consider kittens and cats with mobility limitations, too; a low front entrance may be easier to use.

Think of a cover as a tradeoff, not an odor fix

How the main design choices fit apartment life
Top-entry boxes: consider scatter and access together
The IRIS and Modkat XL offer top entry, which may help keep litter from scattering outside the box. That benefit is only useful if your cat can comfortably climb through the opening. For a small or less mobile cat, compare the opening and step-up with a front-entry alternative.
Corner and hooded boxes: use the shape, check the interior

Check the actual corner dimensions and the room around the entrance before deciding they will fit. Automatic boxes: convenience comes with size and other considerations
Whisker promotes the Litter-Robot EVO for small spaces and one-to-two-cat households. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance findings. Its listed footprint is 20.6 × 24.3 inches and it stands 27.6 inches high; the listed entryway measures 14.85 × 14.85 inches. Edmonton Humane Society also flags potential size, noise, and safety concerns with automatic boxes. Consider whether your cat will use the entry comfortably and whether you have space for access and cleaning.

Match the choice to your cat and your floor plan
- For a small cat that readily climbs: compare top-entry options such as the IRIS or Modkat XL, while checking interior room and the opening.
