Best Friends Animal Society says kittens should be independent eaters by six to seven weeks old. Its foster manual describes starting weaning around four weeks and, in that program, aiming for independent eating by about five weeks. These are foster-care guideposts, not a fixed schedule for every kitten: follow your rescue’s instructions and consider each kitten’s condition.
When kittens are ready to eat independently
Weaning is a transition, not a sudden switch from bottle to bowl. Best Friends’ foster manual describes offering warm gruel made with wet food and formula at around four weeks while continuing bottle supplementation. In its program, the aim is for kittens to eat dry and wet food independently by around the end of five weeks. Its separate independent-eater guidance says kittens should be independent eaters by six to seven weeks.
Those ages reflect Best Friends’ guidance, and the manual’s timing is specific to its foster program. A kitten’s progress and your foster organization’s plan matter more than forcing a calendar. If a kitten is not eating, seems weak, or appears ill, contact your foster coordinator or a veterinarian promptly rather than trying to make it meet a schedule.
What to feed an independent eater
Best Friends recommends dry kitten food as the primary food for independent eaters, with wet food offered frequently. Keep fresh water available and replace it twice daily.

Best Friends’ Utah foster manual names Royal Canin kitten dry and wet foods for its nursery and says foster kittens in that setting should receive that brand or better. That is a local program instruction, not a universal veterinary recommendation or a comparison proving one brand superior. Ask your foster organization or veterinarian which food to use if they have not specified one.
Track eating, weight, and health every day
Best Friends recommends keeping a daily journal of each kitten’s weight, appetite, energy, and general health. Weigh kittens once a day at a similar time so that comparisons are more consistent, and look them over for changes or possible medical problems.

Follow your foster organization’s veterinary plan and escalation instructions. Do not treat another program’s thresholds as universal; contact your coordinator if you are concerned about a kitten’s intake, weight, energy, or health.
Keep the litter area clean
- Scoop the litter box at least twice a day.
- Change and clean the litter regularly, and clean more often if a kitten has diarrhea.
Build in play and safe socialization
Offer several play and socialization opportunities each day. Supervise toys that could be swallowed or cause harm: do not leave kittens alone with string, yarn, or dangling feather toys. Best Friends suggests simple alternatives such as a paper bag with its handles removed or a box with holes.

If you found kittens outdoors
Found kittens are a different situation from kittens already in foster care. Best Friends advises that healthy kittens may have a mother nearby: observe from a distance rather than assuming they have been abandoned. If the mother does not return or intervention is needed, contact an animal-welfare organization. For kittens that look sick or injured, contact an animal-welfare organization or a veterinarian.
