Choose a Houston volunteer program
These organizations offer different ways to help. Check the linked official pages before applying because fees, schedules, and availability can change.
| Program | Age and supervision | Roles and onboarding | Fees and service hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, City of Houston | Minimum age 13. Volunteers ages 13–15 must work with a parent or guardian. Ages 16–17 may volunteer independently after orientation, with parent or guardian involvement. The page says only adults may handle animals; minors can help with activities such as enrichment building and photography. | Four tiers—Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and BARC Buddies—offer different activities. BARC Buddies may suit people who prefer not to handle larger dogs. Doggy Day Out is an intermediate-tier activity; BARC provides supplies and fear-free handling training. Sign up online and register for a Saturday-morning orientation. BARC says volunteers can learn through training and alongside experienced volunteers, even without prior animal-handling experience. | The page does not state a volunteer fee. BARC can validate community-service hours, but court-ordered hours are handled through its Animal Enforcement Office, not regular volunteering. A volunteer may be moved to inactive status after three months without a shift and can return without reapplying. The page reviewed said group events were booked for the rest of 2026, with a 2027 scheduling link to come; check current availability. |
| Houston SPCA | Minimum age 16. Applicants age 18 and older undergo background screening. | Animal-care areas include large dogs, small dogs, the cattery, small animals, wildlife, and equine. The sequence is application and payment, screening when applicable, orientation, role training, then scheduling. After orientation and training, the page lists service seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The uniform includes a volunteer shirt and badge, with closed-toe, closed-heel shoes. | The page lists $40 for volunteers age 18+ and $25 for ages 16–17, covering screening and volunteer materials. Houston SPCA does not accept court-ordered community-service hours. |
| Houston Humane Society | Adult volunteers must be 18+ and complete a background check. Its youth program starts at age 10; a guardian application, consent, and supervision conditions apply. | Options include cat interaction, dog walking, community outreach, administrative and office support, and special events or fundraising. Adults apply and may be invited to an in-person orientation, listed on the page as Saturdays noon–2 p.m. The organization says it can explore accommodations and modified roles. | The page lists a $20 background-check fee for adult volunteers. Houston Humane Society does not offer court-ordered or mandated community-service opportunities. Dog walkers need a slip leash; the page lists one through HHS for $6. It also lists branded shirts at $10. Confirm current requirements and prices before buying anything. |
Pick a role that fits what you want to do
Work with dogs
BARC’s tiered program includes Doggy Day Out for intermediate-tier volunteers, with supplies and fear-free handling training provided by BARC. Houston SPCA lists both large- and small-dog areas. Houston Humane Society offers dog walking and requires its dog-walking volunteers to use a slip leash; that rule is specific to HHS, not a general requirement for every Houston shelter.
Spend time with cats or other animals
Houston Humane Society lists cat interaction, while Houston SPCA lists cattery, small-animal, wildlife, and equine areas. Confirm which roles are accepting volunteers and what training each requires through the organization’s application process.

Help behind the scenes
If hands-on animal care is not the right fit, Houston Humane Society lists outreach, office support, and event or fundraising roles. BARC’s page describes options such as enrichment building and photography for minors, who are not permitted to handle animals under the stated policy.
Foster through Houston SPCA
Fostering is a separate route from volunteering at the shelter. Houston SPCA foster applicants must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license; prior experience is not required. The listed steps include online registration, a training video and quiz, and picking up supplies. Houston SPCA says it supplies food, litter, crates, toys, bedding, and necessary medicine. When the animal is ready for adoption, it returns to the organization. Review the Houston SPCA foster program requirements and ask what is provided before purchasing equipment.

How to get started
- Choose an organization and role. Compare age eligibility, supervision, preferred activity, location, and schedule using the official program pages above.
- Complete the current application. Do this before arriving; Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society list fees for certain applicants or steps.
- Attend orientation and required training. Each program describes onboarding steps, and some roles require additional animal-handling training or screening.
- Confirm your first shift and practical requirements. Ask about current openings, clothing, equipment, accessibility accommodations, and any group scheduling before making plans.
Can you volunteer for court-ordered community service?
Do not assume that community-service rules transfer from one shelter to another. BARC routes court-ordered hours through its Animal Enforcement Office; its regular volunteer program is not the route for those hours. Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society state that they do not offer court-ordered community-service opportunities through their volunteer programs. If you need hours for another kind of requirement, contact the organization before applying to confirm whether it can document them.
