Choose a Houston volunteer program
These organizations offer different ways to help. Check the linked official pages before applying because fees, schedules, and availability can change.

Pick a role that fits what you want to do
Work with dogs
BARC’s tiered program includes Doggy Day Out for intermediate-tier volunteers, with supplies and fear-free handling training provided by BARC. Houston SPCA lists both large- and small-dog areas. Houston Humane Society offers dog walking and requires its dog-walking volunteers to use a slip leash; that rule is specific to HHS, not a general requirement for every Houston shelter.
Spend time with cats or other animals
Houston Humane Society lists cat interaction, while Houston SPCA lists cattery, small-animal, wildlife, and equine areas. Confirm which roles are accepting volunteers and what training each requires through the organization’s application process.

Help behind the scenes
If hands-on animal care is not the right fit, Houston Humane Society lists outreach, office support, and event or fundraising roles. BARC’s page describes options such as enrichment building and photography for minors, who are not permitted to handle animals under the stated policy.
Foster through Houston SPCA
Fostering is a separate route from volunteering at the shelter. Houston SPCA foster applicants must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license; prior experience is not required. The listed steps include online registration, a training video and quiz, and picking up supplies. Houston SPCA says it supplies food, litter, crates, toys, bedding, and necessary medicine. When the animal is ready for adoption, it returns to the organization. Review the Houston SPCA foster program requirements and ask what is provided before purchasing equipment.

How to get started
- Choose an organization and role. Compare age eligibility, supervision, preferred activity, location, and schedule using the official program pages above.
- Complete the current application. Do this before arriving; Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society list fees for certain applicants or steps.
- Attend orientation and required training. Each program describes onboarding steps, and some roles require additional animal-handling training or screening.
- Confirm your first shift and practical requirements. Ask about current openings, clothing, equipment, accessibility accommodations, and any group scheduling before making plans.
Can you volunteer for court-ordered community service?
Do not assume that community-service rules transfer from one shelter to another. BARC routes court-ordered hours through its Animal Enforcement Office; its regular volunteer program is not the route for those hours. Houston SPCA and Houston Humane Society state that they do not offer court-ordered community-service opportunities through their volunteer programs. If you need hours for another kind of requirement, contact the organization before applying to confirm whether it can document them.
