A 2025 study of Golden Retrievers found that protein category in commercial dry food was associated with two specific owner-reported behaviors: dog rivalry and separation-related behavior. It did not show that food causes aggression, that high protein increases aggression generally, or that changing a dog’s food will treat behavior problems.
What the study found
The study, “Association Between Protein Content in Dry Dog Food and Aggression in Golden Retriever Dogs,” was published in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association in 2025. The authors analyzed questionnaire data from Golden Retrievers in a prospective canine health study. Eligible dogs ate commercially available dry food for at least 80% of their daily intake.
The researchers grouped diets by protein content: low (at most 20%), medium (21–29%), and high (at least 30%). They compared ten behavior outcomes using logistic regression, adjusting for sex, reproductive status, and the dog’s primary lifestyle. In the reported estimates, medium-protein food was the reference category.
| Protein comparison | Behavior association reported |
|---|---|
| High protein versus medium protein | Dogs eating high-protein food were 1.3 times more likely to have dog rivalry (95% CI 1.02–1.78). |
| Low protein versus medium protein | Dogs eating low-protein food were 1.4 times more likely to have separation-related behavior (95% CI 1.01–2.03). |
These are associations from the study population, not proof of cause and effect. The high-protein finding concerned dog rivalry specifically; the study abstract does not report a general increase across all aggression behaviors.

What “aggression” meant in the survey
Owners rated behaviors on a scale from 0 to 4. The AAHA explainer says 0 meant no behavior, ratings of 1–2 covered growling or barking, and ratings of 3–4 covered snapping or biting. Because relatively few owners reported scores above 2, the authors grouped responses as any aggression versus none. The findings therefore should not be read as evidence of more severe biting, or as a result covering every form of aggression.
The survey covered aggression directed toward owners, dogs, strangers, and other categories. The specific high-protein association reported in the abstract was dog rivalry, not aggression toward all of those targets.

Why the results do not show that food causes aggression
The study compared dogs already eating different diets; it did not assign dogs to a controlled feeding intervention or test whether switching food changed their behavior. Questionnaire responses also depend on owners’ reports. Other differences between dogs or their circumstances may help explain the associations.
For that reason, the results do not support switching a Golden Retriever to lower-protein food to reduce aggression. In fact, low-protein food was associated with separation-related behavior in this analysis, and the study did not test any diet change as treatment.

How far the findings apply
The evidence is specific to Golden Retrievers whose diets consisted predominantly of commercial dry food. It does not establish the same relationships for other breeds, wet food, homemade diets, or an individual dog. Nor does it compare brands or identify a particular formula as beneficial.
The AAHA explainer describes the survey as including more than 1,600 dogs. That sample size does not turn the observational findings into a diagnosis or a personalized feeding recommendation.

What to do if your Golden Retriever shows aggression
Do not use protein percentage alone to explain a behavior or choose a treatment. Aggression can have multiple relevant factors, and this paper cannot determine the cause in an individual dog. Share the behavior and your dog’s current diet with your veterinarian, who can assess the situation and advise whether further evaluation is appropriate.
The study authors’ clinical conclusion was: “When assessing and treating aggression and separation related-behaviors, clinicians should evaluate and weigh the importance of several factors, including the diet being fed.”
