Fever coat is a rare, temporary lightening of a kitten’s fur that is present at birth. It may look silver-gray, cream, reddish, patchy, or striped, often with pale tips and darker roots. The coat’s appearance is not itself an illness, and it usually shifts toward the kitten’s expected color as the fur grows. The name points to a proposed association with a mother cat’s fever or other stress during pregnancy—not a confirmed cause.
What does fever coat look like?
A kitten with fever coat has fur that appears lighter or more muted than its expected color. It can look frosted or silver-gray, but cream and reddish tones, as well as patches or stripes, are also described. Individual hairs may be lighter at the tips and darker near the roots.
The appearance alone cannot confirm fever coat. A veterinarian or other knowledgeable cat professional can help identify an individual cat’s coloring if there is uncertainty.
How is fever coat different from a smoke coat?
The direction of light and dark along each hair shaft is a useful descriptive clue. Fever coat is described as having lighter tips and darker roots; smoke coat has darker tips and lighter roots. Fever coat is temporary, while smoke is a persistent genetic coat effect.

What causes fever coat?
The cause is not established. Veterinary explainers and the National Kitten Coalition describe maternal fever or fever-causing illness, prolonged or extreme stress, and possibly some medications during pregnancy as proposed associations. No particular infection or medication has been confirmed as the cause.

Scottish SPCA senior vet Jo Neilson has said the phenomenon may depend on a significant rise in the mother’s body temperature and when it occurs during pregnancy. She also noted that fever coat does not appear in every pregnancy involving maternal infection. This is a plausible explanation, not settled physiology. The phenomenon is rare, and its mechanism remains poorly understood; Great Pet Care notes that deliberately inducing fever or stress to study it would be unethical. There is no reliable population-level estimate of how often it occurs.
Does fever coat go away?
Yes. The unusually colored fur is gradually replaced as the kitten grows, and the coat generally changes toward its expected color. Reported timing varies from weeks or months to about a year, so a specific age cannot be predicted for an individual kitten.

Is fever coat harmful, and what care is needed?
The coat appearance itself is not described as making a kitten ill or increasing its risk of illness. The National Kitten Coalition says kittens with fever coat do not need special care because of the coat alone. It is a coloring change, not a diagnosis of the kitten’s or mother’s health.
Because maternal illness is one proposed association, contact a veterinarian if the mother cat was unwell during pregnancy. The coat pattern cannot identify what illness, if any, the mother had. No treatment or special grooming product is established as necessary for fever coat itself.
