UK cat insurance can pay toward eligible veterinary costs, but what you get depends on the policy’s limits, exclusions and conditions. The key difference between policy types is often whether cover for an ongoing condition can continue when you renew—or stops after a time or money limit. You may still pay an excess or percentage contribution, and treatment for pre-existing conditions is usually excluded.
What does cat insurance cover?
A policy reimburses or contributes toward eligible veterinary costs as defined by its wording. Insurers can set different limits, exclusions and conditions, so the label on a policy is not a substitute for checking what it covers. The Association of British Insurers advises comparing the cover itself, not price alone: ABI guidance on pet insurance.
Depending on the policy, the central question is whether it covers illness as well as accidents, and how long or how much it will pay for a condition. Do not assume a treatment category—such as dental care—is included; check the wording for the benefit and its exclusions.
What are the main types of cat insurance?
MoneyHelper describes four broad types of pet insurance. Their names indicate different limits, but the precise rules depend on the policy: MoneyHelper’s pet insurance guide.

| Type | How cover is limited | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lifetime | Eligible ongoing conditions may remain covered while you renew, subject to the policy’s limits and terms. | Whether the limit is annual or per condition, how it resets, and what renewal requires. “Lifetime” does not mean unlimited reimbursement. |
| Maximum benefit | The policy pays toward a condition until its stated financial allowance is used. | Whether the allowance resets, and what happens when it is exhausted. |
| Time limited | Cover for an illness or injury is restricted by a stated time period, amount, or both. Consumer summaries sometimes call this annual cover. | The exact time limit and financial cap for each condition. PDSA describes its time-limited policies as covering eligible vet fees up to the chosen amount or for a maximum of 12 months from first symptoms; that description is specific to the policies on its page, not a universal market rule: PDSA cat insurance. |
| Accident only | Cover is limited to eligible accidental injuries; it does not provide the same illness protection as accident-and-illness insurance. | How the policy defines an accident and which treatment is eligible. |
Broader cover for ongoing conditions may offer more protection but can cost more. A narrower policy may have a lower premium while leaving more costs or risks with you. No type is universally best; compare current quotes alongside the actual policy wording.
What does lifetime cover mean?
Lifetime cover can continue for an eligible ongoing condition from one policy year to the next if you keep renewing, subject to the policy’s limits and terms. It does not promise unlimited cover. Check whether the policy sets an annual limit, a per-condition limit, or both, and whether unused or exhausted allowances reset at renewal. MoneyHelper and the ABI explain the broad distinction, but the contract determines the details.

What does the excess mean—and what else might you pay?
An excess is the amount you contribute toward a claim. Some policies also require you to pay a percentage of eligible costs. That contribution can make a meaningful difference on a large bill, so compare the total you could owe rather than looking only at the premium. Guidance from Cats Protection and MoneyHelper recommends checking the excess and policy terms.
- Find out whether the excess applies per claim, per condition or per policy year.
- Check whether a percentage contribution is also charged and whether it is additional to the excess.
- Confirm the benefit limit and any treatment exclusions before estimating what a claim could pay.
Will insurance cover a condition my cat already has?
Most policies will not cover treatment for a condition that existed before cover began, according to the ABI. Cats Protection describes pre-existing conditions broadly as a health condition or injury the cat had before insurance started. The insurer’s wording and its assessment of your cat’s symptoms and medical history determine how that definition applies.

Changing insurer can affect this protection. The Financial Ombudsman Service says a new insurer is unlikely to cover conditions the pet already has under a new lifetime policy: Financial Ombudsman Service guidance on pet insurance. Weigh any lower new premium against the possibility of losing cover for an existing condition.
What are waiting periods and other exclusions?
An illness waiting period may apply at the start of a policy. There is no single duration established here, so check the policy wording for the period that applies to the cover you are considering.
