A short woodland walk can stretch into a 45-minute “sniffari” when a dog pauses to investigate one scent after another. That duration is the title’s scenario, not a verified account of a particular dog or walk. The idea is simple: let the dog explore safely at a scent-led pace instead of treating distance or speed as the goal.
What is a dog sniffari?
A sniffari is an informal name for a walk that gives a dog time to sniff and explore. Veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals describes a sniff-focused walk as one led by the scents the dog discovers, rather than by pace or distance. Animal-welfare organization Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare likewise recommends letting dogs investigate at their own pace along a safe route.
It does not have to be a special trail, an off-lead outing, or a set amount of time. A dog can sniff on an ordinary walk; the difference is that the handler makes room for safe pauses and exploration.
Why do dogs stop to sniff so much?
Sniffing is a natural way for dogs to investigate their surroundings. VCA and Raystede describe sniff-focused activity as mental enrichment: the dog is exploring information in the environment, not simply covering ground. That supports making room for sniffing, but it does not establish that every walk produces a particular emotional or physical effect.

A sniffari can complement a brisker walk, but the sources do not establish that sniffing replaces all physical exercise. Consider the dog’s health, comfort, training and activity needs when deciding what a walk should include.
How to make a sniffari work on a woodland walk
- Choose a suitable route. Prefer a place where dogs are allowed and where the path and conditions suit your dog. Check signs and land-manager guidance before setting off.
- Let the dog set the pace where it is safe. Pause when the dog investigates, and keep the lead loose enough for comfortable exploration while retaining control. Raystede’s advice is, “Remember, it’s their walk, not yours.”
- Use a longer lead only when conditions allow. Raystede suggests a 6–15 ft lead attached to a harness as one way to give a dog more room while keeping it connected. This is that organization’s recommendation, not a universal standard; the handler must still be able to control the dog, and site rules take priority.
- Adjust for wildlife, livestock and other visitors. Forestry Commission guidance for England recommends effective control and keeping dogs on paths or tracks where appropriate. Some places or situations call for a short lead or a different route rather than extra freedom.
Woodland rules and safety matter
Forestry Commission guidance published on 16 January 2025 applies to England. It warns that dogs can disturb wildlife and livestock, and that disruption—such as disturbing nesting birds or deer—may not be obvious to a walker. Check local rules and site signs; the word “sniffari” does not mean a dog may go off lead.

The Forestry Commission advises avoiding off-lead exercise in quiet areas at dawn and dusk where deer are prevalent, and using short leads or another route when conditions call for them. It also notes that woodland managers may provide off-lead exercise in less-sensitive areas as part of a managed approach. The Commission cautions that visitors are less likely to follow a requirement to always have a dog on a lead, which is another reason for clear, site-specific guidance rather than assumptions about access.
Its England guidance also mentions ticks and adders, as well as Alabama rot and Seasonal Canine Illness, which it describes as very rare conditions whose prevalence or cause remains unclear. Suggested precautions include keeping to paths and away from wet or muddy areas where relevant, washing mud from paws between November and May in relation to Alabama rot, and contacting a vet if a dog shows signs of illness after a walk. These are proportionate precautions, not a reason to treat woodland walks as inherently dangerous.

When an indoor scent activity may help
If a woodland outing is impractical, Raystede suggests scent games, scatter feeding, searches using cardboard, and snuffle mats. A 2025 article on canine enrichment also describes supervised snuffle-mat activity. These are optional ways to offer scent-based enrichment at home; they are not the same as a woodland walk.
Choose activities that suit the individual dog, and supervise them where needed. The 2025 enrichment article advises checking with a veterinarian that activity choices are appropriate for the dog.

What woodland walking figures can—and cannot—tell you
Forestry Commission guidance published in 2025 says dog walking is the main recreational activity for 21% of all woodland visitors in England. It adds that dogs are present among over 80% of visitors in some woodlands—not all woodland sites—and describes a typical dog walk as around 2.7 km and an hour. Those figures provide context about woodland use; they do not verify the 45-minute walk in the title or set a target duration for a sniffari.
