Police safely captured the animal, but available reporting does not explain how she got there or confirm her current placement.
What happened behind the North Texas pizza shop?
Callers alerted North Richland Hills police to an unusual animal outside a MOD Pizza. They described what they saw as a possible “kangaroo or monkey,” but officers identified it as a kinkajou and captured her safely. The animal was then transferred to North Richland Hills Animal Services.
The police department, quoted by KERA, said: “When they arrived, they found a small creature, notably hot and thirsty, looking for refuge from the heat.” The department also asked on social media, “Soooo, anyone missing a kinkajou?” KERA reported on the rescue on August 21, 2026.
What is a kinkajou, and why was it so far from home?
A kinkajou (Potos flavus) is a nocturnal, tree-dwelling mammal native to tropical forests in Central and South America. It is related to raccoons—not monkeys or bears. Its prehensile tail helps it grip branches as it moves through trees. The nickname “honey bear” is informal and does not mean kinkajous are bears. WWF’s kinkajou profile describes the species and its habitat.

North Richland Hills is in suburban North Texas, far outside that natural range, making the animal’s presence there unusual. The distance alone does not reveal how she arrived: the accessible accounts do not establish whether she escaped, was released, or reached the area another way.
Where was the kinkajou taken?
KERA reported that North Richland Hills Animal Services was looking for an owner or a long-term care facility after receiving the animal. On August 24, UPI reported that she had been transferred to Nature’s Edge Wildlife and Reptile Rescue, while noting that her origins had not been determined. UPI’s report establishes that reported transfer, not the animal’s current status.

An October 5, 2026, iHeartDogs article relayed additional details attributed to the rescue’s social media posts. Those details do not confirm her present placement, health, owner status, or final outcome. The article’s account should be read as secondary reporting rather than confirmation of where she is now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why kinkajous are not suitable household pets
Kinkajous have demanding needs shaped by life in tropical forests, including specialized housing and diet. WWF assesses them as high-risk and unsuitable pets, warning that their lifelong care is extremely difficult to provide and that they can pose human-health risks. WWF says captive kinkajous may live up to 23 years, making appropriate care a long-term commitment as well as a specialized one.
