Caring for several pets works best when the home is organized around each animal’s needs—not just the household’s routine. Before adding another pet, assess compatibility, time, space, and veterinary care; introduce animals gradually; separate food and other key resources; and keep an individual care plan and backup caregiver information for every pet.
Before adding another pet, check whether the household can support it
A new pet changes the demands on the animals already at home as well as on their caregivers. Compatibility is individual: a calm introduction cannot guarantee that two particular animals will become comfortable together. The AVMA recommends considering whether a dog will get along with current pets and whether the household can meet its veterinary, feeding, grooming, exercise, play, and elimination needs throughout its life. Puppies may require more frequent feeding, supervision, exercise, and training than adult dogs. AVMA guidance on selecting a dog offers a useful capacity checklist.
Consider the practical arrangement, not only the animals’ species. Age, size, mobility, temperament, health, and diet can affect whether pets can safely share rooms or routines. Ask whether you have enough time and budget for each animal, and whether the home has places where pets can rest apart and retreat from one another. If the answer depends on animals sharing a single feeding spot or having no way to separate, reconsider the plan before bringing a pet home.
How do I introduce a new pet without upsetting the pets I already have?
Use gradual, supervised introductions and preserve the option to separate the animals. Each pet should be able to move away, remain behind a barrier, or spend time in a safe separate area. Do not force contact or assume that tolerating one meeting means the animals are ready to share space unsupervised.

Introducing dogs
For dog-to-dog meetings, AAHA’s new-dog checklist recommends meeting in a neutral place, using loose leashes at early meetings, keeping interactions short and positive, and watching for signs of stress. Feed dogs separately. The checklist advises waiting several weeks before allowing unsupervised dog-to-dog time; that is dog-specific guidance, not a timetable for every species or pairing. AAHA’s new-dog checklist was published June 18, 2026.
Introducing dogs and cats
Give the cat a way to stay safe and avoid being cornered. AAHA recommends using a gate or crate during dog-cat introductions so the cat does not feel forced to run. Keep meetings controlled and brief, and separate the animals when you cannot supervise. Adjust the pace to their behavior rather than moving ahead because a certain number of days has passed.
Introducing cats
For cats, the AVMA advises slow, supervised introductions with periods of separation until they learn to accept one another. AVMA’s cat-selection brochure also emphasizes providing appropriate toileting areas when multiple cats live together. Keep each cat’s access to safe resting, eating, and toileting areas in mind as the relationship develops.

How many litter boxes and other resources do multiple cats need?
For cats, AAHA gives a general guideline of one resource per cat plus one. Its enrichment guidance recommends multiple food and water stations, more than one litter box, and separate areas for eating, drinking, resting, and toileting. The count is a practical rule of thumb, not an absolute standard for every home or every kind of resource. Where resources are placed matters too: multiple bowls or boxes clustered together may still leave one cat able to block another’s access.
Spread resources across separate locations so an animal can reach what it needs without having to pass a housemate or compete for a single station. Consider the layout from each pet’s point of view: can it get to food, water, a resting place, and—where relevant—a toileting area without being trapped or blocked? These recommendations concern cats; do not apply the cat-specific resource count as a universal rule for dogs or other species. See AAHA’s guidance on enrichment at home.
How can I prevent food stealing and meal-time conflict?
Feed pets in separate spaces when one steals another’s food, eats too quickly, or needs a different diet. AAHA veterinary practice guidance also lists food puzzles and separating pets by size or ability as management options. For example, cat food may be placed somewhere a dog cannot reach, or a smaller cat may have access to a feeding area that larger pets cannot enter. Choose an arrangement that is safe and practical for the animals’ age, mobility, and medical needs.

A puzzle feeder can add an activity or make food less accessible to another pet, but it does not replace an appropriate feeding plan or a diet prescribed for an individual animal. If food theft could interfere with weight management or a medical diet, ask your veterinarian how to manage meals safely. AAHA’s veterinary practice guidance describes these feeding-management options.
How do I spot stress or tension between pets?
Watch what happens around the resources and routes pets share, not only for obvious fighting. A cat that blocks another from food or a litter box may be showing tension even if there is no hissing or striking. Other visible conflict can include hissing or striking; take changes in access and behavior seriously rather than waiting for an injury.
AAHA’s 2024 overview of the AAFP Intercat Tension Guidelines reports that 73% of caregivers in a survey of more than 2,000 cats said tension began with the introduction of a new cat. This is a reported survey result, not an estimate that 73% of all cat introductions fail; the overview does not provide the survey methodology. Read AAHA’s overview of the 2024 guidelines.

Enrichment means meeting an animal’s natural needs in ways that support physical health and emotional wellbeing, not simply adding playtime. Offer suitable opportunities for activity, including interactive play for cats. Unmet needs can show up as unwanted behavior, so consider whether each animal has an appropriate outlet and access to its own resources. If conflict persists, intensifies, or makes it difficult for an animal to eat, rest, or use its litter box, consult a veterinarian about next steps.

Keep veterinary records and care decisions individual, even when pets share a home. For cats, AAHA/AAFP vaccination guidance says each cat in a multi-cat environment needs an individualized plan that accounts for both that cat and the household population. Plans should be reassessed when health or lifestyle changes; the cited guidance recommends at least yearly veterinary visits. A veterinarian should set each animal’s vaccination plan rather than applying one schedule to every pet. AAHA/AAFP guidance on individualized feline vaccination plans.
In high-risk multi-cat households, infectious-disease exposure risk is proportionate to the number or density of cats on the premises, according to AAHA/AAFP. This is a reason to discuss preventive care with a veterinarian—especially in crowded settings or when new cats enter—not a prediction that a particular disease will occur in every multi-cat home. AAHA/AAFP guidance on feline patient populations provides the household context.

For dogs and other species, follow species- and individual-specific veterinary advice rather than transferring feline vaccination or resource guidance. Keep each pet’s medical conditions, medications, diet instructions, and veterinary contacts in a record caregivers can find quickly.
What should a multi-pet emergency care plan include?
Prepare a separate, accessible care profile for every animal. The ASPCA recommends recording habits, food preferences, medical conditions, medications, veterinary information and records, and behavior around other pets, people, and children. Keep the information where a caregiver can reach it and share copies with the people who may need to help.
Choose caregivers in advance and check periodically that they are still willing and able to step in. Do not assume one person can manage every animal in every emergency: the ASPCA notes that caring for more than two pets may not be realistic for a single person in some circumstances. Arrange backup help, and make the feeding, medication, separation, and veterinary instructions clear. ASPCA’s pet-planning guidance includes a portfolio approach.
Include routine care costs in the decision to add an animal and plan for unexpected needs. AAHA identifies preventive care, a safe environment, and planning for costs as parts of responsible pet ownership, but there is no single current cost figure that applies to every household. AAHA’s guidance on the cost of pet care can help frame the budgeting conversation.
