Rayne Beau, a two-year-old Siamese cat, disappeared at Yellowstone’s Fishing Bridge RV Park on June 4, 2024, and was found in Roseville, California, about 60 days later and more than 800 miles away. A microchip scan helped shelter staff identify him and contact his owners, who reunited with him the next day. No verified evidence establishes how he reached Roseville or that he walked the distance.
The documented story is an extraordinary recovery—not proof of an 800-mile feline homing journey. Rayne Beau may have traveled independently, by vehicle, with help from people, or by some combination of means; the route remains unknown.
The verified story in brief
Benny and Susanne Anguiano arrived at Yellowstone’s Fishing Bridge RV Park with Rayne Beau and another cat on June 4, 2024. During a transfer from their truck to their camper, Rayne Beau became frightened and ran into nearby trees. The family searched and left Yellowstone on June 8 without him.
On August 3, Alex Betts heard a cat yowling in Roseville, California, and took him to Placer SPCA. Staff scanned Rayne Beau’s microchip, contacted his registered owners, and helped reunite the family the next day.

What happened to Rayne Beau in Yellowstone?
Rayne Beau escaped during a transfer between the family’s truck and camper near Fishing Bridge RV Park. The Anguianos searched for him and left the park on June 8 without him.
Yellowstone’s setting matters for anyone traveling with pets. The National Park Service says pets must remain in developed areas within 100 feet of roads, parking areas, and campgrounds, and must be physically controlled in a vehicle, crate, or leash no longer than six feet. Pets may not be left unattended or tied to objects, and are prohibited from trails, boardwalks, thermal areas, and the backcountry. These rules provide safety context; they do not establish that the Anguianos violated a rule when Rayne Beau escaped. See the National Park Service’s Yellowstone pet guidance.

How was he found in Roseville?
About two months after the disappearance, Alex Betts heard Rayne Beau yowling in Roseville. She took him to Placer SPCA, where staff scanned his microchip and used its registration information to contact the Anguianos. They reunited with him on August 4.
The chip helped identify Rayne Beau after he had been found; it was not a tracking device and did not locate him.
How far away was Rayne Beau found?
Reports describe Roseville as more than 800 miles from Yellowstone, with some accounts giving estimates closer to 900 miles. The reviewed sources do not establish a verified route or a consistent measurement method. The careful wording is that Rayne Beau was found more than 800 miles away, not that he walked that distance.
His exact route, whether anyone transported him, and whether he received food or shelter during the missing period remain unknown.

Did Rayne Beau really walk 800 miles home?
There is no verified evidence that he did. The available record establishes where Rayne Beau disappeared and where he was found, but not how he traveled between those locations.
The Anguianos believed he may have made much of the journey on his own, but the route and any assistance or vehicle transport have not been established. The microchip helped reunite him with his owners after he was found; it cannot explain how he got there.
What does research say about how far lost cats travel?
A 2018 study of missing cats reported a median distance of 50 meters between disappearance and recovery in its dataset. That population-level result offers context for why Rayne Beau’s recovery location is exceptional, but it does not establish an individual cat’s maximum possible range or explain what happened in this case. Read the 2018 missing-cat study for its methods and limitations.
The practical lesson is to start a focused search near the disappearance site and notify local shelters and relevant staff, rather than assuming a missing cat has traveled a long distance.

What cat owners should do before traveling
Rayne Beau escaped during a transfer between a vehicle and camper. These precautions can help reduce the risk of a similar escape:
- Secure the cat before opening vehicle doors. Use a properly closed carrier for transfers between a vehicle, camper, or other location.
- Check the carrier closure. Inspect its doors, latches, zippers, and seams before travel.
- Keep the cat in a secure, enclosed space. Give the cat time to settle in an unfamiliar place before considering any movement outside it.
- Keep microchip details current. Confirm that the registry can reach you at your current phone number and address.
- Follow destination rules. Check current pet restrictions and keep pets physically controlled in permitted areas.
If a cat escapes at a campground or unfamiliar place
- Begin a focused search nearby. Check the immediate area around the escape location.
- Notify people who can help locally. Contact park or campground staff, nearby shelters, and relevant animal services.
- Share clear identifying information. Provide a recent photograph, the last-seen location, and reliable contact details.
- Report the cat missing to the microchip registry. Check that the registry contact information is current.
- Keep checking for updates. A finder may bring the cat to a shelter after a delay.
If you find a frightened or stray cat
If it is safe, contact a local shelter or animal service for guidance and have the cat scanned for a microchip. A scan can help identify an owner, but it will not reveal the cat’s location history or route.
What the headlines get wrong
- “He walked home” presents an unknown as fact. The evidence does not establish how Rayne Beau traveled.
- The mileage is an estimate. Reports say more than 800 miles to nearly 900 miles; no verified route or consistent measurement method is established.
- The microchip did not locate him. It helped identify him after he was found.
- His journey remains unexplained. The available sources do not establish whether he walked, was transported, or received help.
