A single bed can have both. Choose based on how your dog sleeps, how easily they get in and out, and the bed’s support, temperature, and cleaning needs—not on the label alone.
What’s the difference between memory foam and a bolster bed?
Memory foam describes the material or support layer under your dog. A bolster describes the bed’s shape: a raised perimeter around some or all of the sleeping area. They are not mutually exclusive choices; some beds pair a memory foam surface with bolster sides. The American Kennel Club discusses these as distinct bed features and designs: AKC’s guide to dog beds.
When comparing beds, assess the sleeping surface and the edge separately. A raised rim does not tell you how supportive the middle is, and a foam filling does not tell you whether the bed is easy to enter.
Which style may suit your dog’s sleeping habits?
Consider a bolster if your dog curls up
Some dogs like to curl against an edge. A bolster or donut-shaped bed gives them a raised side to rest against, so it may be worth considering if that matches your dog’s usual sleeping posture. It is a preference-based choice, not a feature every dog needs. AKC’s dog-bed guidance discusses bolster and donut beds for dogs that like to curl up.

Consider the surface and support independently
If your dog stretches out, check that the usable sleeping area is large enough in their usual position. For older dogs, AKC advises looking for firm, thick foam support and a cozy, washable cover: AKC’s guide to beds for senior dogs. Those criteria concern the sleeping surface and construction; a bolster may or may not be part of a suitable bed.
What if your dog has arthritis or trouble moving?
A supportive bed may be a comfort consideration for a dog with osteoarthritis, but it is not a treatment plan. VCA recommends considering an orthopedic or memory foam bed as part of comfort, while its osteoarthritis guidance addresses veterinary care and broader management: VCA’s osteoarthritis guidance. A bed cannot diagnose or treat the cause of new pain, stiffness, or difficulty moving.

Access can matter as much as the filling. A tall bed or high rim may be difficult to step over or climb onto. VCA notes that “The ideal bed may be a recessed orthopedic bed that doesn’t require your dog to climb onto it.” See VCA’s guidance for creating a comfortable home for a mobility-compromised dog. If your dog struggles to rise or reach a bed, prioritize low entry and a stable location, and ask your veterinarian for advice about mobility support.
How to compare beds before buying
- Measure your dog in their usual sleeping position. Check the manufacturer’s sizing instructions and make sure the usable surface accommodates a stretch or curl.
- Check entry height and edge height. If stepping over a bolster or climbing onto a raised bed is hard, look for a recessed or low-entry design.
- Evaluate the sleeping surface. Consider the material, thickness, and stability of the bed itself. Do not assume a bolster guarantees support or that “orthopedic” alone tells you how the bed is constructed.
- Check heat and ventilation. Foam, covers, and bolster fills differ by product. VCA advises avoiding bedding that retains too much heat for mobility-compromised dogs.
- Confirm how the bed is cleaned. If frequent washing may be necessary, look for a removable, washable cover and check its care instructions.
- Observe your dog’s response. Their posture and ease of getting on and off are useful practical guides; a design preference is not proof of a medical benefit.
Is one type better overall?
There is no established universal winner between memory foam and bolster beds. The terms describe different features, and a dog may benefit from a combination—or from a simpler design. The veterinary and AKC guidance supports practical selection based on comfort, access, support, and the dog’s preferences; it does not establish one bed design as clinically superior for every dog. If your dog has new pain, stiffness, or movement difficulty, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than relying on a bed choice alone.
