Make clean water easy to reach in several places, then let your cat choose between still and moving water, different bowls, and different locations. You can also discuss adding moisture through an accepted renal diet or a little water mixed into food—but protect your cat’s appetite and nutrition. If your cat seems dehydrated, eats less, or remains unwell, contact your veterinarian rather than relying on another home experiment.
How can I get my cat with kidney disease to drink more water?
Start with access and comfort. The 2026 iCatCare consensus guideline recommends multiple water sources, including fountains and wide-brimmed ceramic bowls, placed where the cat can reach them easily. Offer more than one option and observe which your cat uses; no single bowl or setup is right for every cat.
- Place fresh water in several accessible spots, away from areas where other pets or household activity might make drinking uncomfortable.
- Keep familiar bowls available while you test a different shape, material, location, or water movement.
- Clean bowls regularly and refresh the water so the source stays appealing.
- If your cat has joint problems or finds it difficult to bend, ask your veterinarian whether a raised bowl could make drinking easier.
These are practical, low-risk ways to accommodate preference—not proven methods for achieving a particular fluid intake. AAFP conference proceedings report limited evidence that fountains, bowl type, bowl placement, or flavoring reliably increase drinking. Watch your own cat’s response rather than assuming a change will work.
Will a water fountain help my cat drink more?
It might, if your cat prefers moving water, but a fountain is an option to trial, not a dependable fix. Keep still-water bowls available alongside it so your cat can choose. Consider the ongoing cleaning and maintenance as well as whether your cat actually uses the fountain; ownership alone does not show that intake has increased.

Can I add water to my cat’s kidney food?
Often, a small amount of water mixed into food is worth discussing with your veterinarian. Add it gradually and check that your cat still eats the meal. The 2026 iCatCare guideline cautions against increasing water in food in a way that reduces calorie or nutrient intake.
Ask about wet renal food
Prescription kidney diets are available in wet and dry forms, and wet food can contribute more dietary moisture. Ask the treating veterinarian which renal food suits your cat and how to make any transition. Do not force a sudden switch: maintaining food acceptance and adequate nutrition matters.

Use flavoring cautiously
Cornell’s general feline hydration guidance suggests that a small amount of tuna water or low-sodium chicken broth may encourage some cats to drink. This is not a CKD-specific prescription. Check with your veterinarian before adding either to a kidney diet, especially if your cat has other health conditions.
How much water should a cat with kidney disease drink?
There is no single bowl-drinking target in the guidance here that applies to every cat with CKD. Cornell’s general hydration page gives an estimate of about 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day, but that is not a CKD-specific prescription and does not mean that amount must come from the water bowl. Wet food contributes water, too; Cornell notes that wet food can contain up to 80% water.

Because food moisture and individual health affect the picture, use that general estimate as context rather than a self-diagnosis or treatment target. Ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your cat.
When should I contact a veterinarian?
Contact your veterinarian if you suspect dehydration, notice reduced appetite, or see lethargy, weakness, or other concerning changes. Cats with CKD may become dehydrated, and the right response depends on an individual assessment—not simply on how much water is in the bowl.

Your veterinarian can decide whether clinic-based fluids or a home fluid plan is appropriate. The 2026 iCatCare guideline says subcutaneous fluids at home are not suitable for every cat; they may be considered when dehydration continues despite efforts to encourage voluntary intake. Do not start fluids or choose a dose or schedule without veterinary instruction and monitoring.

Some studies cited in professional guidance report increased voluntary water intake or improved hydration with nutrient-enriched water, but the findings do not establish these products as a CKD treatment or a replacement for veterinary care. One reported study involved healthy adult cats, while the 2026 guideline cites a 2025 study involving clinically dehydrated cats. Ask your veterinarian before using a product for a cat with kidney disease.
