Choose a complete-and-balanced food for your Great Pyrenees’ current life stage, then adjust portions to the dog’s body condition and health. For puppies, look for a large-breed growth statement that covers dogs expected to weigh 70 lb or more as adults, and aim for lean, steady growth—not maximum size. Adult and senior dogs need individual assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all formula.
What food should you feed a Great Pyrenees puppy?
Choose a food labeled complete and balanced for growth. Because a Great Pyrenees is a giant breed, check the nutritional adequacy statement on the package: for a dog expected to weigh more than 70 lb as an adult, it should explicitly say the food supports growth of large-sized dogs. “Large breed” on the front of the bag is not enough to confirm that claim.
The adequacy statement is usually in small print on the back or side of the package. AAFCO identifies it as the key label information for determining whether a food meets a pet’s nutritional needs. Its recognized life stages include growth, adult maintenance, gestation/lactation, and all life stages. AAFCO does not approve individual foods, so an AAFCO reference on a label is not an endorsement.
Support lean growth
Do not choose a puppy food simply because it has more calories, or feed a puppy to make it grow as fast or as large as possible. AAHA advises supporting giant-breed puppy growth while maintaining a lean body condition and avoiding excessive calcium intake. Some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach skeletal maturity until around 15–16 months, but that is not a universal age for switching a Great Pyrenees to adult food.

Use the food’s feeding directions as a starting point, monitor your puppy’s weight and body condition, and ask your veterinarian to assess growth and health before changing life-stage food. Do not add calcium or mineral supplements to a complete puppy diet unless your veterinarian specifically recommends them.
How to verify a puppy-food claim
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary’s 2023 guide listed Pro Plan Puppy Large Breed Formula as supported by feeding tests using AAFCO procedures, including growth of large-sized dogs weighing 70 lb or more as adults. This is a historical example, not an endorsement or a guarantee about current packaging. Formulas and labels can change, so check the current package’s adequacy statement.

How should you choose food for an adult Great Pyrenees?
For an adult, choose a food whose adequacy statement covers adult maintenance. Follow its feeding directions as a starting point, then adjust the amount to your dog’s body condition, activity, health, and response. AAFCO cautions that calorie-rich foods designed for young animals can contribute to obesity in less-active adults.
There is no single daily portion or calorie target that fits every Great Pyrenees. Compare the calorie content of foods using a familiar serving size, and account for how active your dog is, whether the dog works, health needs, food preferences, availability, and budget. Reassess portions if weight or condition changes.

Does a senior Great Pyrenees need senior food?
Not automatically. AAFCO does not define a separate senior or geriatric nutrient profile, and AAHA notes there is no consensus among manufacturers about what makes a diet “senior.” An older dog doing well on a complete-and-balanced adult-maintenance food may appropriately continue it unless a medical condition or other need prompts a change.
When considering a diet change, review body condition, muscle condition, activity, appetite, and diagnoses with your veterinarian. Age alone does not establish that a particular senior-marketed formula is a better fit.

How to compare Great Pyrenees foods
- Read the nutritional adequacy statement. Confirm that the food is complete and balanced for the dog’s current life stage. For puppy growth in a dog expected to exceed 70 lb as an adult, look for wording that explicitly covers growth of large-sized dogs.
- Compare calories and feeding directions. Use the label’s feeding table as a starting point and compare calorie content per familiar serving. Adjust based on the dog’s condition and response rather than treating the table as an exact prescription.
- Track body and muscle condition. Keep puppies lean, and continue monitoring weight and muscle as age, activity, and health change. WSAVA provides body- and muscle-condition tools and nutrition-assessment resources.
- Factor in the individual dog. Consider veterinary advice, medical conditions, activity or working role, preference, availability, and price when deciding among suitable foods.
- Do not rank food by the ingredient list alone. WSAVA cautions that an ingredient list does not reveal ingredient quality or overall diet quality.
For U.S. shoppers, FDA explains that a complete-and-balanced claim depends on meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial. Read the package rather than relying on a front-of-bag phrase, and check the current label because formulations and claims can change.

Ask your veterinarian to help select or reassess food if your Great Pyrenees is growing rapidly, gaining or losing weight, changing body or muscle condition, has a medical diagnosis, or is moving between life stages. A veterinarian can evaluate the individual dog rather than relying on age labels or a general feeding chart.
